The Committee on National Security of the Ukrainian Parliament, during the meeting on explosions in Kalynivka, decided to address President of Ukraine, suggesting to fire Head of General Staff Viktor Muzhenko. The majority of the committee members voted in favour of the decision, two of them abstained. 112.UA Channel broadcasted the meeting.
“We need to address the President, examine the appropriateness of Army General Viktor Muzhenko holding a position of the Head of the General Staff. It’s the first issue. The second: creating an inter-agency commission, including MPs, which will examine the institutional capability of the General Staff under Muzhenko’s leadership,” said Ivan Vinnyk, Committee’s secretary and MP from Petro Poroshenko Bloc political party.
At the same time, head of the committee, MP from All-Ukrainian Union “Fatherland”, Serhiy Pashynskiy announced the vote.
“According to the Constitution, the Ukrainian legislation on the Armed Forces of Ukraine, provisions on the General Staff, to address the President of Ukraine on the issue of dismissing Muzhenko for systematic shortcomings in organizing this work. Second issue – address the Minister of Defence, we have another person, who bears personal responsibility for this – it’s the Head of the Ukrainian Military Law-Enforcement Service,” he said.
As it was reported earlier, a fire occurred at Kalynivka ammunition depot on September 26, causing a number of large-scale explosions. Almost 30,000 people were evacuated from the area.
The military prosecution is investigating the incident as a diversion, while the general prosecution is working on four main versions of what caused the fire.
