The head of the state-owned energy company Naftogaz of Ukraine Yuriy Vitrenko told about Russia's blocking the access of European countries to the Ukrainian gas transportation system (GTS) during his meetings with the United States Congress members in Washington. This was reported by Ukrinform.
"We show congressmen and senators that now there is no third party access to the Ukrainian GTS for gas transit to Europe. In fact, access is blocked by Gazprom, and this is the proof that right now Russia is using gas as a geopolitical weapon," Vitrenko said.
According to him, European companies want to transfer gas transmission points under separate contracts to the Russian-Ukrainian border, in order to book the capacities of the Ukrainian GTS themselves. It will also make it possible to store gas in Ukrainian storage facilities in the summer and deliver it to Europe in the winter when it is needed more.
In addition, Vitrenko said Russia is blocking European companies from exporting gas from Central Asia. Such steps create an artificial gas shortage on the European market.
As it was reported earlier, there is a Joint Statement of the US and Germany on Support for Ukraine, European Energy Security and Climate Goals in the context of the upcoming launch of Nord Stream 2 on the website of German Federal Foreign Office. The document notes the possibility of sanctions against the Russian Federation, including restrictions on energy resources export, if Moscow tries to use the NS 2 gas pipeline as a weapon against Ukraine.
