Mother's Day is celebrated in Ukraine today, May 14.
Mother's Day is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday of May in Ukraine, which is considered to be the month of Mary, mother of Jesus, to whom Christians turn calling for protection and help. Unlike March 8, the International Women's Day, the day when all female population of all ages is congratulated, it is customary to congratulate mothers only and pregnant women today.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Groysman congratulated all Ukrainian women on this occasion.
"I congratulate all on Mother’s Day. I bow down before the women, who give life and protect us with their love!" Groysman wrote on his Facebook page.
It is noteworthy that the holiday was prohibited in 1939 by Soviet authorities. However, on May 10, 1999, the order of Ukrainian president established that Mother's Day is to be celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May.
