Mortality rate twice as high than birth rate in Ukraine

The mortality rate in Ukraine is twice as high as the birth rate, there are 58 newborns for 100 died, as Ukrinform reported referring to Ukraine’s State Statistics Service.

“The population of Ukraine was 42,177 million people as of December 2018. The population decreased by 208,8 thousand people in January-November, 2018,” the State Statistics Service reported.

In 2018, the birth rate in Ukraine fell by 7% compared with the previous year. Over the first 11 months of 2018 312,6 thousand babies were born in Ukraine, and 335,5 thousand 2017.

The data of the State Statistics Service do not take into account information from the occupied Crimea and Donbas.

Earlier it was reported that the top 10 countries with the fastest shrinking populations are situated in Eastern Europe (with a few in Central and Northern Europe), according to UN projections. Bulgaria, Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Croatia, Lithuania, Romania, Serbia, Poland, Hungary, might see their population shrink by 15% or more by 2050. Ukraine’s population will reduce to 36.42 million people by 2050
