EU High Representative Federica Mogherini refused to comment on the words of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko that Ukraine would apply for EU membership in 2024. Mogherini said this after an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Bucharest, answering journalists’ questions, reports Radio Liberty.
“I will not comment on what may happen in 2024, but I am sure that our immediate goals, in particular the plan of the 20 achievements of the Eastern Partnership until 2020, are quite real and feasible. They will positively affect the lives of citizens in partner countries, and in the European Union itself. In this pragmatic cooperation, we can achieve excellent results," said Mogherini.
She is convinced that over the past five years, the block of European states and Ukraine have been able to achieve things that not so long ago could have seemed unrealistic - namely, the trade agreement, an association agreement and visa liberalization.
“Ten or even five years ago, it was difficult to imagine many things in the current relations between the EU and the Eastern Partnership states, in particular, Ukraine. I’m talking especially Ukrainians, who experienced a very dramatic period five years ago. Three goals were achieved: the most perfect FTA agreement, the association agreement that created the framework for regular exchanges at the political level. Finally, visa liberalization, which has always been a priority for Ukrainians, Moldovans and Georgians, "Mogherini said.
Earlier, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko announced that Ukraine will apply for the European Union membership in 2024.
