Stepan Poltorak resigned from the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the rank of Army General.

Poltorak remains the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, but filed a report on dismissal from military service, since from January 1, 2019, the Defense Ministry should be headed by a civilian. Poroshenko satisfied this report.

"I appreciate the contribution of Stepan to the revival of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and before that to the restoration and establishment of the National Guard of Ukraine, I decided that he should continue to lead the defense department as a civilian minister," Poroshenko said.

Stepan Poltorak has been heading the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine since October 14, 2014. Prior to that, he commanded the National Guard, and even earlier, after the Revolution of Dignity he headed the Internal Troops prior to their disbandment.

The rule regarding civilian minister of defense is spelled out in the law on national security. According to the document, starting next year, the Ministry of Defense should be headed by a civilian minister, and the position of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Chief of the General Staff, will be divided between the two leaders. We recall that the General Staff is headed by Victor Muzhenko.
