President, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko during his working visit to Zaporizhia and Donetsk regions visited military training ground where he watched the process of the complex tactical exercises of different forces for the seacoast defense. The drills were designed to check the readiness of the Ukrainian army and other military formations against the possible Russian aggression from the Sea of Azov side. The press office of the Presidential Administration reported.
After watching the exercises, Petro Poroshenko noted that the militaries worked perfect and thanked the leadership and the military personnel of the units for taking part in the drills.
In addition, the President watched the first and the second stage of the drills, in particular, “Fight for grounding” and “Rolling defense”.
“The units of the Marine Corps, coast artillery, army aviation, the tank units of the Ukrainian Navy and the Ground Forces take part in the exercises. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are working in close coordination with the National Guard of Ukraine and State Border Guard. Totally, 600 servicemen and 150 equipment units are involved in the exercises,’ the press office reports.
The aim of the exercises is to drill the reaction of the Ukrainian Army and Navy along with the other power units on possible deploy of conditional enemy’s assault forces on the coast of the Sea of Azov.
The Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also held an operative session in the HQ of the exercises, where he heard the presentation of General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Army General Viktor Muzhenko and Chairman of the State Border Guard of Ukraine Colonel-General Petro Tsyhykal for fulfilling objectives determined by NSDC regarding the opposition to the threats in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
It should be noted that the Russian activity in the Sea of Azov increased over the last three months. Russians do not allow the trade vessels heading to and emerging from the Ukrainian ports to freely pass through the Kerch Strait. In this regard, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko commissioned the Minister of Defense, the Chief of the General Staff and the Commandment of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to take measures to stop Russian provocations in relation to blocking the entry of vessels into Ukrainian ports on the Azov Sea. The Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine developed a set of measures in response to Russia's actions. The set of measures includes the limit of passenger traffic with Russia.
