Singer Maruv, who won the national selection for Eurovision 2019, called the competition too politicized. She stated it in the interview to the Russian news agency Super, which published the video on YouTube on February 26.
“One of the reasons why I did not want to participate in the Eurovision is that the contest is too related to politics. Sometimes, even too much. But I am not easily scared and like to break the stereotypes,” Maruv said.
The singer also confessed that her fans convinced her to participate in the national selection.
“My fans very often send me direct messages asking to participate, they tell it would be cool and great. A lot of people write: “It would be nice if you presented Russia”, for example, or Belarus. Generally, they pressed me a little by their opinion. That is why I agreed on this adventure, however, I am still not sure for 100% whether this decision was right,” she said. Maruv also complained about special attention to her caused by her participation in the national selection.
The singer also repeated her statement that music unites people: “In contrast to politics, music really unites. And it is awesome. I think that people have forgotten about this a little and we need to remember about it.”
“I would like people to know about my opinion and I would like to calm down the whole world a little because I think that as soon as people forget about the horrors of the last war, the new one appears,” Maruv said.
Later Maruv stated on Instagram that this interview was recorded before the final of the national selection.
“I did not give any interview or comments after the victory at the national selection for Eurovision 2019, despite those, which present at my official pages on the social networks,” Maruv wrote. She also promised to answer all questions soon.
Earlier we reported that singer Anna Korsun (Maruv) would not present Ukraine at the song contest “Eurovision 2019”. Maruv said that she was forced to refuse from the participation in the contest from Ukraine due to her tour in Russia.
“I am ready to refuse from performances in Russia. I have answered all the questions the jury had on air. I have not visited Crimea since 2014. I have not violated any law of Ukraine. Besides, I am ready to assume all the costs related to participation in the international contest,” she stated.
Maruv won at the Ukrainian national selection for Eurovision and should perform with Siren Song in the first semi-final of the Eurovision, which will take place on May 14. Her performance was planned for the second half of the show.
Besides, STB Channel stated that the rules of the national selection for Eurovision do not contain demands on the absence of the tours in the Russian Federation. It also added that only the National Television Company of Ukraine can decide who will present Ukraine during the Eurovision.
