Garbage from Lviv was found in the exclusion area in Chornobyl on April 24, reports press service of the National Police of Kyiv region.
One of the heads of local government turned to police saying he found a pile of garbage dumped near Bober and Korolivka villages.
The investigation unit of police arrived at the site and during the inspection of the area found nine dumps on the territory of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Police seized documents or their fragments from each heap that prove that solid waste is from the Lviv city.
Criminal proceedings opened under Article 239 (pollution or damage of land) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Sanction of the article article provides for a fine or loss of the right to occupy certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years. Pre-trial investigation is continuing.
Earlier it was reported that wastes from Lviv will be taken by 19 landfills in the region, according to memorandum signed by regional and city authorities, as well as bodies of local self-government in the region.
