Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko is ready to solve the issue of the pardoning of Ukrainian Pavlo Sharoyko accused in Belarus of espionage. He may do it on the reciprocal basis as Belarusian citizens Yuriy Politika is accused in Ukraine as BELTA reported.
According to Lukashenko, there were particular agreements on this issue with ex-president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko; however, the Ukrainian side did not fulfill the agreements.
“I am ready to fulfill my promises if the Ukrainian side will fulfill its own,” he said.
Answering the question, whether it is possible to do it before the meeting with current Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky in Zhytomyr, Lukashenko said: “Yes, even tomorrow but you wouldn't make it. You want to take Politika to the court”.
“So, take him there if you want. If you see you are wrong then apologize. Not loud. No matter how. The most important now is not who is guilty but to solve the problem. Release this guy if he is not guilty and we will quietly and calmly solve the issue. But the most important, it will be solved,” Lukashenko concluded.
Pavlo Sharoyko, a reporter for Ukrainian Radio, was detained in Belarus. Belarusian KGB claimed he collected data on Russian military infrastructure in Belarus.
A piece of Sharoyko’s interrogation was published, in which he confessed to having worked for the military intelligence; according to the story, he resigned in 2009, but two years later, he was reinstated as a reserve officer. Later, he started working as a reporter in Belarus, which was a civilian cover.
The Chief Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine refuted the information, saying that Sharoyko was dismissed from his post of the intelligence press secretary in 2009. Belarusian court sentenced Sharoyko to eight years behind the bars.
Citizen of Belarus Yuriy Politika was detained on June 16, 2017 by Ukraine’s Security Service. He was accused of the espionage as his phone contained a file with plan of the offensive Storm held by Ukrainian Army in Donbas.
A 33-year-old man denies all accusations and stated he was going to become a volunteer in Donbas. The Foreign Ministry of Belarus denied the involvement of Politika in the work of the special services.
