The inauguration of the newly elected composition of the Israeli parliament was attended by President of the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine Borys Lozhkin. He shared his impressions of visiting the Knesset on his Facebook page.
According to him, the first priority of the new parliamentarians will be establishment of the national unity. Both the President Reuven Rivlin and the Speaker of the Knesset, Julius Edelstein, spoke about this.
“This topic is especially relevant for Israel today — just half a year ago, for the first time in the history of the state, the parliament failed to form a coalition in the allotted time. The Knesset was dissolved, new elections were held,” writes Lozhkin.
After the recent elections, the situation is almost identical – the votes in the Knesset have been distributed almost equally, and now the two camps again need to agree on a coalition. That is why, another election can become a reality, if the parties do not agree.
“As Julius Edelstein reminded, it was the lack of national unity that already twice had led to the collapse of the independent Jewish state – the United Monarchy and the Hasmonean state. When the Jews fought against an external enemy, they were able to crush empires. But as soon as a civil war between the Jews themselves began, everything collapsed like a house of cards,” continues Lozhkin.
Lack of national unity, especially in the conditions of the external aggression, is common for the history of Israel and Ukraine. One has only to think about the Kyivan Rus and the Ukrainian National Republic (UNR).
“Both Israel and Ukraine will have to do their best to achieve it, as the chances of survival of our states directly depend on how united we are,” Lozhkin concluded.
A “Memory March” with more than 500 participants was held in Kyiv on September 29. The participants of the March went along the same route, which the Kyivan Jews marched, when they were led for their execution in Babi Yar.
