The Russian-controlled “Central district court of Simferopol” illegally imposed an administrative penalty of 12 days arrest and fined Edem Semedlyaev, a lawyer of the Ukrainian political prisoners. This was reported by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmyla Denisova.
“On October 25, Edem came to the Russian police station to provide legal assistance to the activists detained at the building of the Russian-controlled “Crimean garrison military court” for supporting figurants of the “Red Guard Hizb ut-Tahrir case case.” A protocol was drawn up against Edem about the commission of an administrative offense under article of the Administrative Code for resisting the police,” Denisova said.
The lawyer is currently being held in a temporary detention facility in Simferopol. The court fined him for 4,000 rubles (55 USD) and arrested for 12 days.
“Edem Semedlyaev is a lawyer defending Ukrainian political prisoners Seitumer Seitumerov, Arsen Abkhairov, Remzi Bekirov, Nariman Memedeminov, Memed Belyalov, Emil Dzhemadenov, Zevri Abseitov, Remzi Memetov, Refat Alimov, Ferat Saifullayev. All of them were left without legal support for 12 days, which is a violation of the right to defense, guaranteed by Article 13 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, and a direct obstruction of professional advocacy,” Denisova stressed.
Ombudswoman noted that the court's decision was an example of pressure and intimidation of lawyers in the temporarily occupied Crimea and another evidence of the policy of persecution and repression of Crimean Tatars. She called on the world community to respond to another violation of human rights and freedoms by the occupant authorities.
Earlier, Denisova reported that Russian Federation continues to torture illegally detained Ukrainian citizens. A person involved in the "fourth Bakhchysarai group" was deprived of drugs that are vital for him.
