Lyudmyla Kyzyun, the judge of Solemensky District Court in Kyiv decided to subpoena Ihor Kozlovsky, the Ukrainian religious studies scholar detained by the militants of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). Denys Kozlovsky, the nephew of the scholar reported this to Hromadske Radio.

According to Denys Kozlovsky, his uncle was a trustee of his son Svyatoslav that is disabled before he was captured. The necessity to appoint a new trustee appeared to receive the social payment in Ukraine but the judge refused to consider this issue without the presence of Ihor Kozlovsky.

‘We already said to the judge that there is an inquiry from the joint center of the hostages of the SBU that Ihor Kozlovsky is captivated since January 27, 2016, and he cannot be present at the court session. And it is the main ground for re-registering of the trustee because Svyatoslav is not receiving the social payments for two years.  The judge said that it does not worry her and she has a procedure that states that she is obliged to subpoena Ihor Kozlovska. ‘I will subpoena him’, she said. So she will send summons to the occupied territory. But ‘Ukrposhta’ does not deliver there anything and it is a nonsense’, Denys Kozlovsky said.

He also added that the relatives intend to strive for holding the session without detained scholar because they find this situation absurd.

‘We will file the complaint to the supreme judicial authorities. As I know, Iryna Gerashchenko sent an MP request on this issue. We will try to influence the representatives of the judicial authority by all possible methods. Because it is impossible to leave it like that. It is an obvious nonsense and we do not want to pretend that it is a common practice and allow to reschedule the court sessions. This judge has the power to reschedule the court session as many times as she wants and to never deliver a positive judgment’, he added.

Ihor Kozlovsky is the famous Ukrainian scientist, candidate in historical sciences. He taught the Religion Studies at Donetsk National Technical University and was the head of the Donetsk Department of the Ukrainian Association of the Religious Studies Scholars.

Kozlovsky had no possibility to leave Donetsk after the beginning of the war because he took care of his paralyzed son. The Russia-backed militants detained him and locked him up in the basement. The scientist was far from the policy and did not take part in the combat actions due to his age and state of health. According to his son, Ihor Koslovsky could get the attention of the self-claimed authorities during the partaking in the interreligious prayerful marathon For Unity and Peace in Ukraine. It took place in March-October 2014 and Kozlovsky was noticed with the Ukrainian flag there.
