The opening ceremony of the 56th congress of the World Boxing Council (WBC) that takes place in Ukraine for the first time has begun in Kyiv. The celebration takes place at Poshtova Square as the press service of Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko reported.
Vitaly Klitschko, the Eternal World Heavyweight Champion by the WBC and the Mayor of Kyiv, Mauricio Sulaiman, the president of the WBC, legends of boxing Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, Erik Morales and others participate in the ceremony. Also, the presidents of the WBC member countries, referees, sports managers and functionaries arrived in Kyiv.
“We are delighted to welcome all guests in Kyiv. I am glad that we brought together so many boxing stars. During this week we will discuss the future strategies of the world boxing development,” Klitschko said at the opening ceremony.
“I am thrilled that for the first time ever I do not have to arrive in some far location for the WBC congress. As my native city will host this great event”.
Mauricio Sulaiman noted in his welcome speech the high level of the preparedness of Kyiv.
“I am glad to see so many friends from all around the world. It is a very important week for the boxing. I am thankful to Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko and all people who are involved,” he said.
Legendary champion Lennox Lewis noted that he is happy to visit Kyiv again.
“I am glad to see here my friends, brothers Klitschko. It is pleasant to see so many smiling people at the streets of the city. I am sure this congress will be the best ever.”
Evander Holyfield, the legend of the world boxing also thanked for the invitation to visit Kyiv.
“I am happy to be here, in this city, in Ukraine. It is a great honor for me to be present, along with other members of the WBC - the best boxing organization in the world.”
As we reported the holding of the Congress in Kyiv was announced on March 26. Kyiv Mayor, the 'eternal champion' of the WBC Vitaly Klitschko personally agreed with the leadership of the WBC on the holding of this event in the capital of Ukraine.
Earlier Vitaly Klitschko was granted the title of the WBC Eternal Superheavyweight World Champion.
