Hennadiy Kernes died tonight. The mayor of Kharkiv died from the consequences of the coronavirus, with which he has been fighting for a long time while being treated at Charite, German clinic.
According to his friend Pavlo Fuks, the consequences of Covid-19 have given serious complications to the functioning of the vital organs and systems of his body.
His friends and relatives speak about the death of Kernes:
"My friend left tonight, a man infinitely in love with Kharkiv city, for the revival of which he has been working day and night for the last 16 years... I will not say now anything about the day of the funeral, nor about their place – this issue will be resolved soon," Ihor Terekhov, secretary of Kharkiv City Council, wrote.
"Live strong. That was your motto in life. You were the strongest and always fought to the end. You passed away as a winner," Kernes's stepson Rodion Haisinsky wrote on Instagram.
"No man is indispensable. That’s not true. Each person is irreplaceable for someone. You are the best of the best! We love and grieve," wrote Kernes' wife Oksana Haisinska on Instagram.
Kernes was hospitalized back in September. For a long time, he fought for his life, more recently the Kharkiv City Council announced his arrival in the city until December 20. For the first time after his illness, he was going to personally hold a session of the City Council (at the end of October, Kernes won the mayoral election).
However, on December 11, the mayor of Kharkiv had kidney failure, all this time he was on hemodialysis. Six days later, the news of his death came.
Biography of Hennadiy Kernes
Hennadiy Kernes was born on June 27, 1959, in Kharkiv, graduated from the National Law Academy named after Yaroslav the Wise (jurisprudence department) and Kharkiv State Economic University (public service department).
He began his career immediately after graduating from high school and vocational school. From 1976 he worked as a locksmith, milk pourer, watchmaker, and handyman.
In 1986 he went into business.
In 1992-1994, he has been heading the Acceptor production and commercial enterprise.
In 1999-2001 – First Deputy Director of the Kharkiv branch of the Gas of Ukraine Trading House subsidiary company.
From 1994 to 1999, served as a chairman of the board, and then in 2001 – 2006, he has been the president of the NPK-HOLDING joint-stock company with foreign investments.
In 1998 he was elected to the city council.
In 2002, he headed the deputy corps and became the secretary of the city council.
Kernes and the prosecution process
In the early 90s, Hennadiy Kernes spent two years in prison. As a result, as he specified earlier, he was acquitted.
"If they were acquitted, then it turns out, I served my sentence for nothing. Well, in this way they formed a general opinion among popular people in the city, and I was a popular person, so I ended up behind the bars. But I came out with strict conclusions."
Kernes' other prosecution concerns the Euromaidan era.
In March 2015, the Prosecution General completed a pre-trial investigation against the mayor of Kharkiv under the criminal articles "Unlawful deprivation of liberty or abduction of a person", "Torture" and "Threat of murder".
The case was investigated in February 2014 and concerned suspicions of Kernes's involvement in the kidnapping and beating of Maidan supporters in January 2014.
In 2018, the court closed the case, but in January 2020, the decision to close the case was overturned. Subsequently, the court sessions were postponed several times.
Six years ago, an attempt was made on Hennadiy Kernes. It happened on April 28, 2014.
Kernes was shot while jogging along the Belgorod highway, he was seriously injured, as a result of which his lung and liver were pierced.
After the assassination attempt, Kernes was forced to move in a wheelchair.
Mayor of Kharkiv
On October 31, 2010, Kernes won the mayoral elections in Kharkiv, gaining 30% of the vote. After five years, on October 25, 2015, he was re-elected. In October 2020, Kernes won the mayoral election for the third time. gaining 60.3% of the votes.
According to Ihor Terekhov, Kernes's funeral will take place next week. Approximately Monday or Tuesday.
