One of central Kyiv streets – Ivana Kudry Street – has been renamed into John McCain Street, after the late American Senator. Kyiv City Council decided this on March 4, as its press office reported.

The members of the local state body supported renaming of this street.

“We have renamed this street as Ivan Kudrya was a Soviet intelligence officer and the head of reconnaissance and sabotage groups in Kyiv during the Second World War. His main task was to fight against “the Ukrainian nationalists,” the Kyiv Council informed.

Volodymyr Prokopiv, the Secretary of Kyiv Council, noted that John McCain has actively supported Ukraine’s interests and its aspirations to live in a modern, democratic state. Besides, he has been to Donbas multiple times.

“I would like to note that NGOs and residents have appealed to us. An electronic petition to the city authorities with a proposition to perpetuate the name of John McCain was registered. Therefore, it’s quite logical that Kyiv Council named one of the streets after him,” Prokopiv.

He also noted that the family of the American politician supported this initiative. Kyiv City Council has received an official letter from the Senator’s wife Cindy McCain.
