Ivan Bakanov has officially chaired the State Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). Ukrainian lawmakers supported him as he ran for this office during the parliamentary session in Kyiv on August 29; it is the first plenary day of the new convocation of the Parliament.

His predecessor Vasyl Hrytsak is fired from the office.

Bakanov has previously served as Acting Head of the Service; he got the job on May 22, soon after President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky assumed his office.

Bakanov is a qualified lawyer who graduated from the Academy of Labor and Social Relations in Kyiv. Since 2013, he has been the CEO of Kvartal 95, Ltd. and Studiya Kvartal-95, Ltd.

The official's political path began in December 2017, when he chaired the Servant of the People party. He also led the electoral staff of Volodymyr Zelensky during the presidential campaign.
