The Donbas Conflict should not become frozen and it is necessary to invest efforts for it. Jussi Niinistö, the Minister of Defense of Finland claimed this at Vancouver at the meeting with Stepan Poltorak, Ukrainian Defense Minister at the UN conference on peacekeeping issues as the press service of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry reported.
Poltorak told about the situation in the East of Ukraine and principals that can be the basis of the successful UN peacekeeping mission. Niinistö assured the Ukrainian minister on the readiness to cooperate.
‘We should do everything necessary to not allow freezing the conflict in this region. The possible variant of peacekeeping is the Minsk Agreements and all sides of the conflict should stick to them and restrain themselves from the aggression towards the civilians. We are ready to cooperate with Ukraine, for opinion exchange and we will discuss all these issues more detailed during the visit to Helsinki in the beginning of 2018’, Niinistö said.
A few months ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed with the idea of introducing UN peacekeepers to the occupied part of the Ukrainian Donbas. Kyiv, its Western allies on the one hand and Moscow, which does not recognize itself as a party to the conflict in Donbas, on the other, have different positions regarding the mandate of such UN mission. Russia proposes to deploy peacekeepers on the line of delimitation, while Ukraine and its partners insist that peacekeepers must be deployed throughout the occupied territory, including the uncontrolled by Ukraine part of the border with Russia.
As it was reported earlier Kurt Volker, the US Special Envoy to Ukraine and Vladislav Surkov, the Counselor of Russian president discussed all topical issues on the settlement of the Donbas conflict, including the issue of the UN peacekeepers in Belgrade on November 13. Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson of Russian president reported this.
Earlier, Surkov claimed in the result of the meeting with Volker that the US proposed addendum to the Russian draft resolution on the UN mission in Donbas. Particularly, the American side offered to add 29 points to the draft resolution but Russia accepted only 3 of them.
