In October, Ukrainians will have extra weekends on the Day of Defender of Ukraine; students will prepare for Teachers' Day and the month will end with Halloween that is also a weekend.
How many weekends are expected?
In October, Ukrainians will have 11 weekends thanks to the state holiday – the Day of Defender of Ukraine. It will take place on Thursday, October 14. Thus, the weekends are October 14,15,16,17.
October 2-3, 9-10, 24, 30-31 are also weekends.
Besides, Ukraine switches to winter time on the last Sunday of October at 04:00 a.m.: the clock is turned back for an hour.
Holidays and memorable dates
October 1 – the world celebrates International Day for Older Persons. It aims to draw the attention of people to the extension of the possibilities for older people, including the participation in social, economic, and political life.
In 2021, Teachers' Day is celebrated on October 3, on the first Sunday of the month. The festive events take place at schools on Friday; children come to school with autumn flowers and congratulate their teachers. In some schools, students and teachers exchange their roles on this day – students of senior classes teach lessons and the teachers have the rest.
The World Space Week starts on October 4.
Besides, World Animal Day is celebrated on October 4. It was founded in 1931 and it aims to pay attention to the problems of animals.

Almost a billion people in the world suffer from mental disorders; annually, three million people die as a result of alcohol abuse, and every 40 seconds, a person commits suicide. One more negative factor is the Covid-19 pandemic, which violated the usual life of millions of people. The pandemic has caused interruptions in the provision of medical aid and impeded access to the service on the protection of mental health, especially in terms of the emergency humanitarian situation and conflicts.

Thursday, October 14 is one of the largest holidays of the month – the Day of Defender of Ukraine. It is a public holiday and a weekend. It is the day of celebration of courage and heroism of the defenders of the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine. in 2014, Petro Poroshenko has established this holiday on October 14 instead of the Defender of the Fatherland Day that was celebrated on February 23. The holiday concurs with the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks and Intercession of the Theotokos.
