In Chernivtsi region, three villages may sink under water due to dam’s destruction

The water in Cheremosh River, which flows on the border of Chernivtsi and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, has started to fall but during this process, the dam #9A started to destroy and it may flood two villages and a hamlet in case of burst. This was reported by Ukrinform, citing Head of Basin Management of water resources of Prut and Siret Rivers Andriy Kavulya.

“Currently, in Vyzhnytsia area, two emergency services work on conservation and no-release of water in the bottom-land. The situation is critical in Banyliv and Sloboda-Banyliv villages; there is a possibility of underflooding of Seraphymetsk hamlet. Currently, there are damages in Vyzhnytsia area and Vyzhnytsia city. This night, during the flood decline, the new dam #9A has started to destruct and the emergency service works there as well as the workers of the Basin Management of water resources, Emergency Service, administration and local citizens. Everyone tries to conserve this dam. Because if it bursts, the situation will be critical for Banyliv and Sloboda-Banyliv villages,” he said.

Andriy Kavulya also reported that only after the complete end of the flood, the experts will be able to calculate the damage from the burst of the dams and fortifications and then they will be able to proceed to the setting up and restoration of the damaged areas.

“We hope that from Monday, it will be able to calculate how many resources are needed to repair the damages parts of dams and fortifications. We will appeal to a reserve fund for aid. The issue is about dozens or even hundreds of millions of hryvnia,” he said.

Kavulya noted that according to the preliminary information, as of June 25, there are 29 damaged hydraulic structures in the territory of the Chernivtsi region. All of them have different damage states. There are critical dams, which are damaged but they stay and hold back the water and some dams are completely destroyed.

On June 23, the first consequences of the bad weather and heavy rains were reported in the Ivano-Frankivsk region.

Later, Ukraine's State Emergency Service announced the read alert in Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi regions.
