The last month of autumn has come. Let us talk about the important events and memorable dates of November this year.

There will just one public holiday at the end of November - Day of Dignity and Freedom. However, there will be no day off after this day.

Key dates of November

November 6. Day of Liberation of Kyiv from Nazi Invaders

The 76th anniversary of the Day of Liberation of Kyiv from Nazi Invaders will be marked in the capital. On November 6, Soviet troops freed Kyiv from Hitler's forces. 

Different events are planned on this day, in particular, congratulating the veterans and putting flowers to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. 


November 9. Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language

The Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language is a state holiday marked in Ukraine on November 9. The holiday was established in 1997 by the president’s decree in support of the “initiative of public organizations and taking into account the importance of Ukrainian language in consolidation of Ukrainian society.”

According to Orthodox calendar, it is the day of honoring Nestor the Chronicler, a hagiographer and founder of Old East Slavic historiography, the first historian of Kyivan Rus, philosopher, scientist and a monk of Kyiv Pechersk monastery. It is believed, that it is he who started using written Ukrainian language.

Traditionally, on the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, people lay flowers at the monument to Nestor the Chronicler. On this day, Ukrainians can also award best popularizers of Ukrainian, encourage publishers who print literature in Ukrainian, conduct regional thematic competitions, etc.

Ukrainian Language International Competition of Petro Yatsyk starts on this day. The competition is held with the support of Education Ministry of Ukraine and League of Ukrainian philanthropists. Annual number of contestants is over 5 million from 20 countries.


November 21. Day of Dignity and Freedom

The Day of Dignity and Freedom is a public holiday established by President Poroshenko in 2014 and is marked on November 21 every year in Ukraine.

The Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU should have been signed at a summit meeting of Eastern Partnership in Vilnius held through November 28-29, 2013. However, on November 21, the Ukrainian government decided to stop the preparation for signing the Association Agreement. On the same day, late at night, people started gathering at Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv to protest against this government's decision.

November 23. Remembrance Day of Holodomor Victims

Annual Day of Remembrance of Holodomor Victims falls on the fourth Saturday of November.

Traditionally, on this day, Ukrainians go to commemorative church service and put symbolic pots with wheat and candles to the memorials to the victims of Holodomor. 

The main commemorative event is held near the Memorial sign 'The Candle of Remembrance in Kyiv.' Leaders of the country, foreign politicians, representatives of different organizations and religious denominations etc. take part in it.

At 4 p.m., national minute of silence is announced and after that, people all over Ukraine start bringing candles to the memorial to the victims as part of the action 'Light the Candle.' One can also light the candle in the window of the house.

November 17. International Students' Day

The holiday of all students is marked in the world on November 17. In Ukraine, it was established by President Kuchma on June 16, 1999.

November 28. Start of Nativity Fast

The Nativity Fast in Ukraine traditionally starts on November 28 and will last 40 days - until January 6, 2010.

The believers pray in this period and restrict themselves in fun and food.

The Nativity Fast is not as strict as the Grand Fast. Dairy, eggs, and meat are excluded from the food. On some days, you can have wine and fish.
