Hungary is expecting Ukraine to investigate the group of people who took the Hungarian flag from the building of the city council of Berehovo, Zakarpattia region, and tried to burn it, as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary Péter Szijjártó told Hirado.hu.
Mr. Szijjártó says he has addressed the Ambassador of Ukraine in Budapest. He also emphasized that such things aren’t allowed happening in a well-functioning European country.
“The perpetrators must be detained and brought to court responsibility as soon as possible,” Mr. Szijjártó said.
On November 12, some 50 activists of nationalist political party Svoboda took the flag of Hungary from the city council building and wanted to burn it. However, local police retrieved the flag and return it to its place.
The flag is hanging on the city council according to the MPs’ decision since 2006. Flags of Berehovo, Ukraine, and the EU are hanging next to it.
Head of Zakarpattia regional administration Hennadiy Moskal says that the political forces that organized the provocation don’t have popular support among the locals.
