The Hungarian consulates in Berehove and Uzhhorod of Zakarpattia region, have been granting Hungarian citizenship to local residents who are citizens of Ukraine for seven years. This was reported by the spokesperson of the Zakarpattia Regional State Administration Yaroslav Halas, as the UNN agency reported.
"The Hungarian Consulates General in Berehove and Uzhhorod of Zakarpattia have been issuing Hungarian passports to the residents of Zakarpattia who are citizens of Ukraine for seven years. It is a little strange, that a video of the fact that has been known for 7 years is causing such a resonance now," Halas said.
He added that this question should have been resolved when the law on the simplified acquisition of Hungarian citizenship was adopted in 2010.
According to Yaroslav Halas, about 100 thousand residents of the region has already received the Hungarian citizenship. In addition, he noted that there are no legal grounds for taking away the Hungarian passports from citizens.
Reportedly, earlier, Ukrainian outlet Ukrinform published the video where a number of Ukrainian citizens receive Hungarian passports and take an oath of allegiance to Hungary in the Hungarian Consulate in Berehove. The procedure is followed with the advice of the Hungarian diplomat to not to tell Ukrainian authorities about the receipt of new documents.
Earlier, Hungarian Ambassador in Ukraine Ernő Keskeny claimed that Ukrainian Hungarians have an absolute right to receive Hungarian passports when the former head of Zakarpattia Regional State Administration Viktor Baloha claimed that 90 thousand of Zakarpattia residents have Hungarian passports.
Head of Ukrainian MFA Pavlo Klimkin claimed that early published on the net video with the issuance of Hungarian passports in Zakarpattia region is being verified. If it proves to be true, then the Hungarian Consul may be expelled from the country.
