Conflict in eastern Ukraine
Pro-Russian militants continue shelling Ukrainian Army positions.
The OSCE SMM reported 186 explosions in Donbas on September 15-17. Observers of the mission continued to monitor the areas of delimitation at Stanytsia Luhanska, Zolote and Petrivske (all in Luhansk region).
Mission's access remained limited in all 3 delimitation zones for three days. In addition, the SMM visited the border area in the Luhansk region, which is not under control of the state.
The unease around the Russian-Belarusian military exercise West-2017 remains.
On September 16, two Russian military aircrafts Il-76 invaded the airspace of Lithuania. The Russian military aircrafts were flying over Lithuanian territory for two minutes. They were heading towards one of the airfields in Kaliningrad region from the main territory of Russia.
MFA of Lithuania handed a protest note to the Ambassador of Russia due to the incident, demanding explanations and taking measures for non-repetition of such incidents in future.
As a part of the drills, there was an involuntary launch of air-to-surface missiles from a Ka-52 helicopter at a training ground near St. Petersburg. Splinters scattered vastly, at least two cars were burnt, two people were seriously injured; they are now hospitalized. The exact date of the incident is unknown. According to the agency, it was around September 17-18.
However, the Russian military denied this information.
‘The complete estimations will take a few weeks but we already have a signs that the scale and geographical coverage of ‘West-2017’ far outnumber the initial announcement’, spokesperson of NATO Oana Lungescu said.
Poroshenko at the UNGA
Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko arrived in New York on September 18 to participate in the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly. There he delivered his speech before the assembly, and met a number of high-ranking officials of the world community.
Thus Ukraine’s President met Presidents of Poland, Slovakia, Austria, and Turkey. He also talked to Mike Pence, Nikki Haley, and Donald Tusk.
The President also discussed deploying peacekeepers with the UN Secretary General.
The most anticipated event of Poroshenko’s trip to New York was his meeting with US President Donald Trump.
The White House commented on the meeting, saying that Trump “welcomed Ukrainian reforms that contributed to economic growth in the country and defense capabilities, and also urged President Poroshenko to continue work to eliminate corruption and improve the country's business climate” and confirmed his support for Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity. In addition, the leaders of the countries discussed ways to achieve a truce in eastern Ukraine.
Trump, in his turn, wrote that the meeting “was wonderful” on Twitter.
Odesa clashes: May 2 tragedy
The situation was tense in Odesa, where twenty suspected organizers of a riot on May 2, 2014, in which 48 people were killed, were found not guilty.
The court stated that the prosecution didn’t give conclusive evidence of their guilt.
However, officials of the Security Service of Ukraine came into the court room when the acquittal was being announced, and handed two of the figurants - Serhiy Dolzhenkov and Evgeniy Mamedov (citizen of Russia) a new notice of suspicion.
35 law enforcers were injured in the clashes.
