The unease around the Russian-Belarusian military exercise West-2017 remains.

On September 16, two Russian military aircrafts Il-76 invaded the airspace of Lithuania. The Russian military aircrafts were flying over Lithuanian territory for two minutes. They were heading towards one of the airfields in Kaliningrad region from the main territory of Russia.

MFA of Lithuania handed a protest note to the Ambassador of Russia due to the incident, demanding explanations and taking measures for non-repetition of such incidents in future.

As a part of the drills, there was an involuntary launch of air-to-surface missiles from a Ka-52 helicopter at a training ground near St. Petersburg. Splinters scattered vastly, at least two cars were burnt, two people were seriously injured; they are now hospitalized.  The exact date of the incident is unknown. According to the agency, it was around September 17-18.

However, the Russian military denied this information.

Finally, NATO confirmed that the claimed numbers of military participating in the drills, given by Russia and Belarus, were false.

‘The complete estimations will take a few weeks but we already have a signs that the scale and geographical coverage of ‘West-2017’ far outnumber the initial announcement’, spokesperson of NATO Oana Lungescu said.
