Donbas conflict

The Armed Forces of Ukraine used the American anti-tank missile system Javelin in the hostilities in Donbas. Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov said so in an interview.

The White House is considering sending additional weapons and military advisers to Ukraine amid Russia’s buildup of forces near its border.

Some 30 mercenaries from Finland have participated in Donbas conflict since 2014, fighting against the Ukrainian military. It appears that according to Finnish law, participation in foreign conflicts is not considered illlegal, so these people did not face any criminal prosecution.

The SBU, Security Service of Ukraine conducted anti-terrorist drills in Donbas.

Mykhailo Podolyak, the Assistant Chairman of the Office of the President of Ukraine said there will be no martial law in Ukraine in case of the invasion of Russian military forces. Mykhailo Podolyak, the Assistant Chairman of the Office of the President of Ukraine. 

Dmytro Kuleba, Foreign Minister of Ukraine claimed that in case of Russia's full-fledged invasion, the Ukrainian side will be defending itself with all means at its disposal.

Zelensky press conference

President Volodymyr Zelensky hosted a big press conference timed to the halfway mark of his time in this office. The head of the state answered dozens of questions from reporters.

Perhaps his most unexpected statement was the one about the coup d’état that is being prepared in Ukraine. Zelensky also said that Ukraine would have to rely on itself in case of Russia’s military invasion.

Besides, he stated he would not fire the head of his Office, saying Andriy Yermak was not involved in the failed operation to apprehend Wagner group militants.

Covid-19

This week, Ukraine reached the number of over 13 million people of those who receive their first Covid vaccine dose and over 10 million people of fully vaccinated citizens. It has promised to the IMF to vaccinate 17 million people by the end of 2021.

Scientists from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine have concluded that the country has passed the peak incidence of coronavirus and the third wave of the pandemic has declined. Kyiv School of Economics stated that it is too early to say that and new Covid-19 cases are expected to rise in January 2022 unless a lockdown is introduced.

Kyiv city, Donetsk, Odesa, Kherson, Luhansk and Lviv regions will soon leave the red quarantine zone. Travel restrictions on public transport will be eased for the red zone, while quarantine conditions in yellow zone areas will be toughened.

A new variant of the Delta strain of coronavirus was discovered in Ukraine.

New species of coronavirus was discovered in bats in Britain, as well as a new infectious strain of coronavirus with 32 mutations. Italy introduces a "super green pass", Israel is on the verge of an emergency due to the spread of a new African strain of Covid-19 and begins vaccinating kids aged 5-11, New Zealand plans to reopen its borders to the world over the coming months and the European Commission promises to lift the entry restrictions for citizens of all third countries who have been vaccinated against coronavirus.

Nord Stream 2

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba assured that Ukraine and its partners continue to work to prevent Russia from using the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline as a weapon. Foreign Minister stated that Ukraine expects Germany's clearer position in terms of Nord Stream 2.

Ukraine's Ambassador in Berlin Andriy Melnyk said that the future German government should refuse from the Nord Stream 2 launch to save Ukraine from the Russian military invasion. The diplomat called on the future coalition of German political forces, including the Greens to "bury Nord Stream 2 on the bed of the Baltic Sea."

Foreign Policy reported that Biden administration tries to lift Nord Stream 2 sanctions.

Meanwhile, US State Department said that the United States would continue imposing sanctions on those involved in Nord Stream 2.

Migrants

This week, illegal migrants attempted to break through Polish border over 300 times, injuring at least one border guard. Poland may ban the transit of goods from Belarus. Lukashenko warns Poles not to close border with Belarus. Poland expects more refugees from Afghanistan on Belarusian border.

Polish and Ukrainian presidents agree to jointly fight Russian hybrid attacks on border. Ukraine allocates $6.5 million to strengthen border with Belarus, and it’s HQ for prevention of migration crisis on border starts working.

Germany refuses to accept migrants staying in Belarus. Over 10,000 people are said to have illegally entered Germany from Belarus in 2021 alone, while over 11,500 illegal migrants were detained in Belarus this year.

Lithuania claims that Belarusian law enforcers have been using the new tactics of sending the migrants to the border. Estonia strengthenth border with Russia from possible influx of migrants. EU is going to blacklist travel firms that transfer illegal migrants.

Sports

Ukrainian teams lost their games in European football competitions this week. Shakhtar Donetsk lost to Inter in Milan (2-0), and Dynamo Kyiv could not cope with Bayern Munich; Kyivites put up a good fight, though. Besides, Zorya Luhansk lost to AS Roma at Stadio Olympico, with no more chances to keep playing in European competitions this season.
