About Day of Dignity and Freedom and Holodomor
On Wednesday, November 21, Ukrainians marked the Day of Dignity and Freedom. Memorial rallies took place in Kyiv and some other major cities of Ukraine. In Kyiv, people started their procession from Maidan Nezalezhnosti Square and walked along the Heavenly Hundred Alley, brought flowers and lit the candles paying tribute to all those who perished during the Revolution of Dignity.
On November 21, Ukrainians mark the Day of Dignity and Freedom. It takes people back to the events of two revolutions in Ukraine; the Orange Revolution took place in 2004, and the Revolution of Dignity occurred in late 2013-early 2014.
On November 21, 2013, a rally began in Kyiv, as people protested against the government's decision to suspend the signature of EU-Ukraine Association Agreement. The protesters demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Mykola Azarov. When the police rudely dispersed that peaceful demonstration, even more people reached Kyiv's Maidan Nezalezhnosti Square, protesting against such brutality. More than 20 countries all over the world supported Ukraine with solidarity actions. In January and February 2014, the events in Kyiv eventually led to an open conflict with law enforcers. According to official data, at least 108 people deceased in street fights; most of them suffered fatal gunshot wounds, others were beaten to death by government-hired thugs.
On November 23, another sad date is observed in the Ukrainian history and modern times. Citizens pay tribute to the victims of Holodomor, the largest man-made famine in the history of humankind. This year, the main commemorative events will start on the territory of the National Museum "Memorial to Holodomor victims" in Kyiv. At 4 p.m., a national minute of silence will be announced and after that, people all over Ukraine start bringing candles to the memorial to the victims as part of the 'Light the Candle' action. One can also light the candle in the window of the house.
