More shooting is observed in eastern Ukraine. Since the counter-terrorist operation (ATO) was re-branded into the joint forces operation (JFO), as stipulated by the the law of Ukraine 'On reintegration of Donbas', the number of attacks has somewhat increased.
Almost 600 inhabited localities were cut off the grid in Luhansk region due to the militants’ attacks.
Ukraine’s SBU, the state security service, found out that Russian regular military was involved in the attack on residential quarters of Mariupol, Donetsk region in early 2015. That obnoxious shelling claimed lives of 29 and injured 92 people. Vasyl Hrytsak, the SBU Head said this at a briefing on Monday. ‘Particularly, this terrorist action took place with the support of two regular reactive divisions of Russia’s Armed Forces. These people are involved in this crime. Meanwhile, Russia sent its 76th humanitarian convoy to the occupied Donbas. Russian authorities have been sending the so-called humanitarian convoys to Ukraine since August 2014. The Russian side claims the trucks carry food, water, medicines, books, agrarian instruments and other necessities. Ukrainian border guards cannot check the contents of trucks, and Russia refused to send their humanitarian aid through the controlled checkpoints on the border, as requested by Ukraine. Ukraine insists there are weapons and ammunition aboard the trucks, so they reach Kremlin-backed militants that keep on attacking Ukrainian positions.
Ukraine’s defense minister Stepan Poltorak summed up the casualties among the military and civilians in Donbas since the conflict kicked off in Donetsk and Luhansk regions in spring 2014. According to him, 3, 332 soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine died; that including 2, 394 battle casualties and 938 non-combat fatalities.

On May 8, Ukraine celebrated the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation and observed a minute of silence in a memory of WWII victims. Since 2014 the Ukrainian state has abandoned a tradition to celebrate Soviet Victory Day for the first time ever and held the official events due to the end of the war in Europe on May 8 and May 9.
On May 9, a solemn procession on the Alley of Glory to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Kyiv took place. Also, the Immortal Regiment held its march at holding portraits of those deceased at the WWII, anti-fascist posters and with Soviet songs. According to the Police, about 2000 people participated in the march, which is less than a year ago. During the events in Kyiv six people were detained and later all of them were released.
Also, the events dedicated to the Victory Day took place in Odesa, Zaporizhia, Lviv, Poltava, Dnipro and other cities of Ukraine. A few incidents with the detainees were reported.
No Putin in Aachen. Leaders of Ukraine, Germany and France negotiated in the German city on Thursday, May 10. Petro Poroshenko, Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron talked through the ways to settle the ongoing conflict in Donbas, as well as the extension of sanctions against the Kremlin and bringing UN peacekeepers to eastern Ukraine. Since Russian leader Vladimir Putin was not present, the meeting can not be considered a part of the Normandy Four agenda, Angela Merkel said earlier.
Ukraine’s president Petro Poroshenko coordinated the preparatory steps for Normandy Four meeting with French and German leaders. ‘We know that the meetings of Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron with Vladimir Putin will take place on May 18 and May 23. We clearly agreed and coordinated the steps, agenda that we should do to hold the meeting in Normandy Format. It is most likely that it will take place in Paris’, Poroshenko noted.
Russian media reported that the Kerch Strait Bridge will be opened on May 15 or day later as the opening ceremony will take place with the participation of Vladimir Putin and the precise date depends on the schedule of the Russian president.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko ordered to sue Russia for the ecological damage brought by the construction of the bridge over Kerch strait in occupied Crimea.
The Ukrainian side has withdrawn from the treaty with Russia on the construction of the bridge in 2014 after the annexation of Crimea. The works on the construction have begun in May 2015, regardless the withdrawal.
During the assembly in Cherkasy school on May 8, the children started to lose consciousness. At first, the Emergency Service reported about the hospitalization of three children, but later the number of schoolchildren hospitalized in Cherkasy increased to 51, and 11 of them were taken to intensive care units. According to the Health Ministry, the state of children is estimated as mild and medium poisoning.
Law enforcers opened a criminal case to investigate the breach of sanitary rules for prevention of infectious diseases and mass poisoning, as the Interior Ministry reported.
The Emergency Service press center reported that their chemical and radiological laboratory has checked whether the air on the territory of the school was contaminated by the dangerous chemical substances. There was no dangerous increase in chemical substances of the air, according to preliminary data.
Later, it was reported that the state of the majority of schoolchildren who suffered from poisoning in school in Cherkasy was satisfactory.
