Donbas Conflict

More shooting is observed in eastern Ukraine. Since the counter-terrorist operation (ATO) was re-branded into the joint forces operation (JFO), as stipulated by the the law of Ukraine 'On reintegration of Donbas', the number of attacks has somewhat increased.

Almost 600 inhabited localities were cut off the grid in Luhansk region due to the militants’ attacks.

Ukraine’s SBU, the state security service, found out that Russian regular military was involved in the attack on residential quarters of Mariupol, Donetsk region in early 2015. That obnoxious shelling claimed lives of 29 and injured 92 people. Vasyl Hrytsak, the SBU Head said this at a briefing on Monday. ‘Particularly, this terrorist action took place with the support of two regular reactive divisions of Russia’s Armed Forces. These people are involved in this crime. Major General Stepan Yaroshchuk, the Command of missile forces and artillery of Russia’s South Military District a managed the operation from the territory of Russia’, Hrytsak claimed.

SBU also determined the identities of Oleh Demyanenko, lieutenant colonel of Russian Armed Forces, who is responsible for the training of the so-called company task group Karpaty, which mostly consisted of Ukrainian citizens – members of the armed gangs in Donbas. The Ukrainian service also identified those who served as drill instructors in Wagner Group (Russian paramilitary organization).

Meanwhile, Russia sent its 76th humanitarian convoy to the occupied Donbas. Russian authorities have been sending the so-called humanitarian convoys to Ukraine since August 2014. The Russian side claims the trucks carry food, water, medicines, books, agrarian instruments and other necessities. Ukrainian border guards cannot check the contents of trucks, and Russia refused to send their humanitarian aid through the controlled checkpoints on the border, as requested by Ukraine. Ukraine insists there are weapons and ammunition aboard the trucks, so they reach Kremlin-backed militants that keep on attacking Ukrainian positions.

Ukraine’s defense minister Stepan Poltorak summed up the casualties among the military and civilians in Donbas since the conflict kicked off in Donetsk and Luhansk regions in spring 2014. According to him, 3, 332 soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine died; that including 2, 394 battle casualties and 938 non-combat fatalities.

No Putin in Aachen. Leaders of Ukraine, Germany and France negotiated in the German city on Thursday, May 10.
