Donbas conflict

It was stated that occupied Donbas citizens come to Russia for work en masse.

Meanwhile, numerous attacks were reported in Donbas conflict area this week.

OSCE suspended drone flights in Donbas.

At the press conference, President Zelensky said that the passportization of occupied Donbas residents is first step to annexation of the territory.

Coronavirus

This week, Ukraine got a new batch of the Pfizer vaccine. Ukraine will receive €50 million from EIB for Covid vaccination. Besides, World Bank will provide $90 million to Ukraine for the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. Ukraine and Moldova also signed agreement on mutual recognition of vaccination certificates.

This week, Sanofi and GSK announced successful trials of their coronavirus vaccine.

Meanwhile, Turkey starts mitigation of quarantine restrictions, as well as the UK and Portugal. Besides, the EU stated it will allow visits of the citizens of third countries in case of full vaccination. However, the EU failed to reach an agreement on the vaccine certificate.

In India, the record number of deaths from Covid-19 observed since the beginning of the pandemic. In Japan, doctors call for cancellation of the Olympic Games in Tokyo due to Covid-19.

Zelensky press-conference

On May 20, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky held a press conference dedicated to the second anniversary of his election. Volodymyr Zelensky talked to journalists from 12:00 on the territory of Antonov State Enterprise. On this day, Ukraine celebrates Vyshyvanka Day. However, the head of state came to the meeting with journalists not in a Ukrainian shirt, but in a classic suit.

During a press conference, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the main priority for the government is a country without oligarchs. And he announced sanctions of the National Security and Defense Council against the oligarchs.

Volodymyr Zelensky considered the passportization of residents of the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions to be the first step towards the annexation of territories.

President of Ukraine also commented on the probable meeting between US President Joe Biden and Russian President Volodymyr Putin. According to him, the big risk is that the United States may lift sanctions imposed on Nord Stream 2.

He also commented on his rule over two years. According to him, he understands what he is doing and where he is going. Zelensky said: "My desire to run for a second term will coincide with the desire of the society."

In the end, Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he had become a verdict for the fifth President Petro Poroshenko. The latter just “does not want to admit that it happened.”

Biden-Putin meeting

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and U.S. Leader Joe Biden are going to meet in June. However, the place of their meeting is not defined yet. Sources said that the most probable place for the meeting of the leaders is Switzerland. Meanwhile, Finland is also ready to provide a platform for the presidential meeting. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky also commented on the meeting of Biden and Putin.

Nord Stream 2

At the beginning of the week, it was reported that German authorities would continue Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline construction. Two environmental organizations, the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) and Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), filed an objection against the construction of the pipeline in January, referring to a particularly sensitive period of winter rest of birds.

Later it became known that Biden administration would waive sanctions on Nord Stream 2 AG, its CEO.

US State Department was due to inform Congress on May 20 about lifting of sanctions against company building Nord Stream 2.

Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine started to write an appeal to the U.S. on sanctions against company building Nord Stream 2.

Eurovision 2021

Eurovision 2021 song contest officially started in Rotterdam on May 16. The semi-finals are due to take place on May 18 and May 20. The final will take place on May 22. Only 34 out of 39 countries participated in the ceremony due to the coronavirus. 

The Ukrainian band Go-A, which represents Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest this year, made it to the final of the song contest and rose in the ranking of bookmakers. After that, the video of the performance of Ukrainians on stage with the song Shum gained more than half a million views on YouTube overnight - at the time of writing – 700,381.

It became known later that the Ukrainian band Go-A will perform in the second half of the Eurovision final show in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The vocalist from the Netherlands Emmie van Stijn, who replaced the sick frontwoman of the Go-A band Kateryna Pavlenko during the rehearsals of Eurovision-2021, came to personally support Ukraine in the first semifinal

The Cultural Codes of Shum song video has appeared on the Internet. In a video posted on the Your Underground Humanitarian YouTube channel, they told what Go-A showed at Eurovision. The authors talk about the symbols, allusions, and hidden hints of the performance
