Donbas conflict

Ukrainian troops keep deflecting the attacks of Russian mercenaries. Unfortunately, casualties keep coming, too. On May 13, a sniper of Russian occupants killed one of Ukrainian defenders.

One of the main topics of the meeting between the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and the President of Russia Volodymyr Putin may be the analysis of the implementation of the agreements of the Normandy Four. The World Bank intends to fund vaccination for 10 million Ukrainians. Besides, Ukraine and UNICEF will hold training of primary healthcare doctors.

Meanwhile, the EU will not renew the contract with AstraZeneca for vaccine supply. EU also sued AstraZeneca, demanding 90 million doses of the vaccine by late June. Besides, Norway axed the AstraZeneca jab from its vaccine program. 

Greece opens the border for foreign tourists; while Germany mitigated entrance rules for foreigners.

Israeli–Palestinian conflict


On May 11, a new phase of bloody face-off began between Israel and the Palestinian Autonomy. Hamas militants fired dozens of missiles on central and southern districts of the country, and the Israeli Defence Forces returned fire, landing dozens of airstrikes on infrastructure and deploying ground forces in the vicinity of the Gaza Strip. Both sides took casualties in the bloodshed.

The UN Security Council will gather to discuss the situation in Israel and the Gaza Strip on Sunday, May 16. 

Medvedchuk's case

This week, Pechersky court of Kyiv had a hearing to choose a restrictive measure for the Chairman of the Political Council of the Opposition Platform - For Life party Viktor Medvedchuk. The prosecution demands to set a bail of 300 million UAH (around 11 million dollars) for him. 

On May 11, Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova stated that suspicion of treason and attempted embezzlement of national resources in the annexed Crimea were signed for MPs Viktor Medvedchuk and Taras Kozak.

Pechersk district court put Medvedchuk under house arrest. The politician left the Prosecutor General's Office, having looked through the charges against him. "I read (the suspicion) and took a copy. The accusations are unfounded, unsubstantiated and, in general, they can be called political", Medvedchuk told Interfax news agency while leaving the building.

Eurovision and music

Ukraine has entered TOP10 at 2021 Eurovision after the first rehearsal of the first semi-final participants. However, second rehearsal of the Ukrainian Go-A band took place without lead singer Kateryna Pavlenko as she fell ill the day before.

Meanwhile, famous DJ Martin Garrix and leaders of U2 band Bono and the Edge have presented an official song for UEFA Euro 2020, as well as an official video.


On May 12, Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina began her performance at the WTA Internazionali BNL d'Italia tournament in Rome. The athlete defeated Amanda Anisimova in three sets. On May 14, it became known that she played her second fixture. Svitolina went toe-to-toe with Garbiñe Muguruza. The Ukrainian put up a good start but then allowed the Spaniard to cut the point spread. However, Elina regained her confidence and took the game under control.

Shakhtar Donetsk head coach Luis Castro left the Donetsk team. For Castro it was the first experience of working outside Portugal. The Portuguese said goodbye to the fans over the weekend, when the team played the last match of the season.

On May 13, Dynamo Kyiv won the Cup of Ukraine. By beating Zorya 1-0, the White Blues scored the gold double, winning both the national championship and the Cup.
