About Donbas

Ukrainian military held three days-long exercises in Donbas combat area. The Joint Forces Operation HQ reported that on Tuesday. A tank unit scrambled on alert and covered the distance of 20 kilometers. Then, military vehicles were transported across the river under the cover of combat aviation. Combat engineers set the minefields from Mi-8 helicopters.

Trilateral contact group (TCG) in Minsk came to an agreement about the beginning of mine clearance of the adjoining territories of Stanytsia Luhanska bridge in eastern Ukraine.

Water supply mechanism was damaged in Luhansk region, as shells hit the pipeline in this area.

The works to clear mines in the area around the bridge near Stanytsia Luhanska checkpoint began on August 1. The district state administration reported this as quoted by its press office.

On August 2, Ukrainians pay tribute to the paratroopers who defended the country and the nation at the cost of their lives.

About Azov Crisis

The dog of Ukrainian sailors captured by Russia returned to Ukraine. While 24 seamen still stay in custody in Russia, Jessie the dog came back. Sailors of the Yany Kapu tug boat crew told the lawyers about the dog almost immediately after the meeting and asked to find it and try to return home. It took several months to find it and reach an agreement with the FSB and Kerch border guards who kept it.

About Handziuk case

On July 31 a year ago acid attack was committed against Ukrainian public activist Kateryna Handziuk. On November 4 she died at the age of 34. Her death was caused by multiple organ failure and chemical burns. Five people were imprisoned within the criminal proceeding. Yet, the names of those who ordered murder were not revealed.

On July 31, 2019 people showed up near the Main department of Kherson police to hold a protest dedicated to the case. Protesters also arrived at the house of Deputy Head of Kherson Region State Administration Yevhen Ryshchuk and Kherson Region Council.

Another rally was held near SBU in Kyiv. About 200 people showed up near the building, some of them burned firecrackers. They demanded to punish those behind the high-profile assassination of Kherson-based public activist.

About Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia

Crimean Tatar activist Edem Bekirov stated he would announce hunger strike and refuse from medicine if Supreme Court rules to pass his case to Krasnoperekopsk. According to Bekirov, he will not survive transportation due to his health condition, as he wrote in his appeal.

Ukrainian journalist Roman Suschenko could be either exchanged for some Russian prisoner detained in Ukraine or be brought back to Ukraine where he would serve time in jail.


Earlier, it was reported that Russia planned to build a new detention facility for 1 500 prisoners in the occupied Crimea.

About corruption

This week, Head of President’s Office Andriy Bohdan said that Chairman of Kyiv City Administration Vitaliy Klitschko had to leave his post as he had lost control over the capital.

Later, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko appealed to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) with a request to open a criminal case on the statement of the head of President’s Office Andriy Bohdan about a 20 million dollar bribe.

It was reported that Ukraine's anti-corruption campaign targets both Klitschko and Poroshenko.

About sports

Dynamo Kyiv won the Super Cup of Ukraine; Kyivites defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1. Thus, they defended the trophy that they won last year. It's the seventh Super Cup of Ukraine for Dynamo; Shakhtar got eight of these trophies so far. 

Maryan Shved, the winger of Celtic FC and the national team of Ukraine played the first official match for his new team; he previously moved from Karpaty Lviv. The club from Glasgow came to Estonia for the UEFA Champions League game against Nõmme Kalju FC. Shved's first appearance for Celtic took place in the second half. One of the two goals in this game became his achievement; he scored shortly before the full time.

Games of UEFA Europa League's Qualification Round 2 are over. Zorya Luhansk defeated Buducnost Podgorica and proceeded to Round 3, where it is to face CSKA Sofia.Mariupol FC will start playing in this season's League in Round 3; the team will stand against AZ Alkmaar. Another Ukrainian team, Oleksandriya FC, will start its performance in the League's group stage, while Zorya and Mariupol still have to beat the qualification to join the group stage.

Ukraine’s top tennis player Elina Svitolina will play in the quarter-final of the tournament in San José. The prize fund makes some $900,000.Russian tennis player Daria Kasatkina was Svitolina’s opponent. Ukrainian athlete won after two set (6:3, 6:1). In the quarterfinal, Svitolina will face Maria Sakkari from Greece.
