About Donbas conflict

Russian regular troops performed staff rotation in the occupied Donbas this week, on July 13-17, with Russian officers and privates replacing their colleagues. Ukraine's Defense Ministry reported that, citing the Main Department of Intelligence. The reports say that 10 percent of the newly arrived servicemen were isolated for self-observation purpose, as they appeared to be infected with coronavirus.

The body of Dmytro Krasnohrud, the commander of reconnaissance force of the 93rd Detached Mechanized Brigade is now on the territory controlled by Ukraine. The fighter was killed in an attack that occurred on July 13.

U.S. Department of the State offers Ukraine condolences due to the recent murder of Ukrainian medic in Donbas, as Russian mercenaries continue to attack positions of Ukraine's government forces there. Mike Pompeo, the Secretary of the State said this during the briefing released by the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine. The medic deceased, trying to recover the body of his dead comrade.

About coronavirus

As of July 17, 57,264 cases of Covid-19 infection have been confirmed in Ukraine. 6,689 of the cases registered in Kyiv.

This week, India passed 50,000 doses of Omvir on Ukraine for the treatment of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the initial phase of the medical tests of the vaccine against Covid-19 was successfully finished in the U.S. It caused a strong immune response in 45 patients who appeared to be test subjects for it.

However, Ukraine is one of the leaders among European countries in terms of the largest daily growth of Covid-19 cases. The Health Ministry stated it intends to extend lockdown in Ukraine for another month. During the quarantine, Ukraine will be divided into "green", "yellow", "orange" and "red" zones with clear criteria for restrictions. It was specified that the adaptive lockdown in Kyiv might be extended until 2022.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the arrival of dozens of thousand of Hasidim-pilgrims in Uman for the celebration of Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah in the traditional format this year is impossible.

About new laws and bills

This week, Verkhovna Rada was asked to consider a bill No. 2362 on teaching in the Ukrainian language in educational institutions. One of the proposals of the bill from Buzhansky, concerns the number of hours of teaching in Ukrainian which were to be reduced.

Rally in support of Ukrainian language was held near Verkhovna Rada because of that. Later, Verkhovna Rada decided not to consider Buzhansky's bill on language.

At the same time, Ukraine’s parliament supported bill on safety, quality of donated blood. It also amended the Election Code.

Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada supported the second reading and as a whole the bill No.2285-д regarding the legalization of the gambling business. 

Zelensky withdrew the bill on officials' salaries from Verkhovna Rada.

About important appointments 

On July 16, the Verkhovna Rada appointed new Head of the National Bank of Ukraine Kyrylo Shevchenko. Besides, Olha Pishchanska got the position of the Head of the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine (AMCU). Meanwhile, Oleh Urusky was finally appointed as the Vice Prime Minister - Minister for Strategic Branches of Ukraine's Industry.

About traveling

The infamous coronavirus pandemic forces countries to apply new travel restrictions regarding other countries. For example, Lithuania put Ukraine on the list of countries whose citizens must undergo a 14-day quarantine when entering Lithuania.

Hungary, in its turn, allowed Ukrainians to enter the 30-kilometer zone on the territory of the country.

Ukraine updated the list of countries of the "red" and "green" zones. Albania, Bulgaria, and Egypt were added to the "green" zone.

About MH17 case

July 17, 2020 marks the sixth anniversary of the downing of Boeing 777, the passenger aircraft of Malaysian Airlines, known as flight MH17. The plane was destroyed while performing a regular flight from the Netherlands to Malaysia in July 2014. The tragedy took place in the sky over the militant-held section of Donetsk region, not far from Snizhne town. All 298 people aboard deceased; most of the victims, 196, were Dutch, but there were citizens of another nine countries as well.

A man who may be one of the key witnesses in the MH17 case has been detained in Ukraine earlier this week.

The European Court of Human Rights has filed a lawsuit by the Netherlands against Russia over the crash of the Boeing-777 over Donbas, flying to Kuala Lumpur with flight MH17. The relevant document is published on the website of the European Court.

About sports

Two-time world title contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko may get his shot at the WBC middleweight title. A potential bout against Jermall Charlo is in talks for autumn.

Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) presented a new design of the game uniform of the national football team of Ukraine. Some of its elements were inspired by the traditions of Ukrainian embroidery.
