About Donbas conflict

Ukraine’s military serviceman Yevhen Shchurenko deceased in combat in Donbas.

OSCE reported hundreds of explosions in Donetsk and Luhansk regions this week; on weekend alone, the overall number made 200 blasts.

Ukrainian armed forces detained a wounded Russian mercenary who served as a member of black ops group.

Main Directorate for Migration of Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs claimed that in 2019, 227,000 inhabitants of the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions received Russian passports.

Counterintelligence of Ukraine's State Security Service (SBU) conducted a special operation, which resulted in the detention of former "minister of the coal industry" of the so-called "Donetsk People's Republic." The press office of the SBU reported that on Wednesday. Operatives and investigators of the agency found out that the individual was actively involved in shaping the domestic policy of his ministry. He supervised the work of coal extraction enterprises and the distribution of energy resources in the temporarily occupied areas of the Donetsk region.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted a resolution recognizing Russia as a party to the Minsk agreements, European Pravda reported. The Assembly also applied a resolution on the state of the monitoring procedure with critical remarks against Russia, in which, in particular, it expressed concern about anti-democratic processes in the Russian Federation.

About coronavirus

As of Friday, January 31, according to Zelensky, no a single case of infection with coronavirus has been registered in Ukraine, there are no grounds for emergency measures. Evacuation of Ukrainians from China is underway.l

 Two first people with coronavirus infection were found in Russia.

The World Health Organization believes that Ukraine might cope with the epidemic of coronavirus. Howeve, is Ukraine ready to take the challenge?

Ukraine expects to get systems to detect coronavirus the next week. Meanwhile the virus shall be detected by a process of elimination

About sanctions

On January 28, EU ambassadors supported the decision to impose sanctions on seven people involved in organizing and holding the so-called Crimean elections in the fall of 2019. It was also reported that EU was preparing to lift sanctions from closest circle of Yanukovych.

On January 30, Canada imposed new sanctions on Russians involved in Crimea elections. These are sanctions under the Special Economic Measures Act on six individuals involved in the illegitimate elections.

U.S. also expanded sanctions against Russia in response to annexation of Crimea. The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated eight individuals and one entity.

About PACE and NATO

The winter session of PACE has started on January 27. Firstly, the PACE lawmakers stopped the automatic confirmation of the authorities of the Russian delegation. However, PACE agreed upon the draft bill on the appeal against the authorities of the Russian delegation in the Assembly.

Besides, the Assembly elected delegate from Russia Petr Tolstoy as the vice president in the second tour by the majority of the votes. And it adopted a resolution recognizing Russia as a party to the Minsk agreements.

In its turn, Ukrainian delegation stated that it will continue work in PACE, abandoning the demarches amid the recent decisions of the Assembly.

On January 30, NATO positively assessed the implementation of reforms in Ukraine, but insists on the need to pay special attention to the reform of the Security Service and the defense industry.

About Milke Pompeo

Also, Mike Pompeo arrived in Ukraine to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to U.S. Secretary of State, U.S. support for Ukraine is "unwavering". He also told what would be discussed with the Ukrainian government.

About Handziuk case

On Monday, the Prosecutor General's Office filed to Bulgaria the materials on the extradition to Ukraine of Oleksiy Levin (Moskalenko), the suspect in the organization of the attack on activist Kateryna Handziuk.

It was noted that certain people do not want the extradition of Oleksiy Levin and provided him with the lawyers.

On November 4, 2018, it became known that Kateryna Handziuk died at the age of 34. She was doused with sulphuric acid in July this year. According to preliminary information, her death was caused by blood clot's detachment. 

About sports

Ukrainian athlete Vladyslav Bukhov set a world and European junior swimming record. He managed to overcome the distance of 50 meters in butterfly style in 23.14 seconds.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Yulia Levchenko got prize places at the Springer-Meeting high jumping tournament. Mahuchikh conquered 1.98 meters and won, while Levchenko placed second with the result of 1.96 meters.

Viktor Postol will not be able to fight for WBC and WBO light welterweight world titles in February due to the outbreak of the Wuhan coronavirus in China. The fight will likely be rescheduled in the United States.
