Donbas conflict, coronavirus, fire in Kharkiv nursing home, Nord Stream 2 and other news of the week

Donbas conflict 

Ukrainian military serviceman was shot dead by a sniper of Russian occupants in Donbas. The enemy did not use heavy weaponry this week, but skirmishes with the use of small arms, heavy machineguns and grenade launchers still take place.

Head of the Ukrainian delegation in Minsk trilateral contact group Leonid Kravchuk offered OSCE representative and head of political subgroup Pierre Morrel to develop the united document about the solution of Donbas conflict.

Cadets of Kharkiv National University of Air Forces of Ukraine conducted a tribute ceremony for the deceased defenders of Donetsk airport who lost their lives in combat with Russian occupants in 2014-2015. The ceremony took place on January 20.

Coronavirus

Ukraine registered a bill that enable the country to use Pfizer\BioNTech, Sinovac Biotech, Moderna, Sinopharm, AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines. Besides, the EU promised Ukraine to help in obtaining the vaccine. Moreover, the World Bank to provide Ukraine with $88.5 million for purchase of vaccines. The commercial market of Ukraine might get Covid-19 vaccines until summer 2021. Meanwhile, Cyxone, Swedish Biotechnology Company Cyxone would like to test its Rabeximod drug in Ukraine.

The WHO and scientists warned about the consequences of global inequality in the access to the vaccines against Covid-19.

A new strain of Covid-19 was observed in Germany. Besides, a German man died after the reinfection with coronavirus. The scientists state that South Africa Covid-19 strain spreads 50% quicker than the usual coronavirus infection.

This week, UAE approved the Sputnik V vaccine for use; while Hungary became the first EU country to approve the Russian vaccine. Besides, Angela Merkel offered Russia her help at Russian vaccine approval by the EMA. Moreover, Russia revealed 100% efficacy of its second EpiVacCorona vaccine.

Fire in Kharkiv nursery home

On January 21, the fire occurred at the home for elderly people in Kharkiv. 15 people died and 11 suffered as a result of the fire. January 22 was declared a morning day, while January 23 was declared the nationwide mourning day. The Council of Europe expressed condolences about the tragedy that occurred in the nursing home. It was reported that four suspects were detained as they might be possibly involved in the deadly fire at a nursery home.

Biden inauguration

On January 20, Joe Biden was inaugurated as the 46th president of the United States. Together with him, Kamala Harris, the country's first female vice president, took the oath as well.

During his speech, Biden urged to end the "uncivil war" between Democrats and Republicans.

At this point, Ukraine is already working on the organization of a meeting between Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Nord Stream 2

This week, Germany expressed regret over U.S. new sanctions against Nord Stream 2.

Earlier, it was reported that the U.S. government would impose sanctions against the Russian Fortuna barge that holds work on the completion of the construction of Nord Stream 2 and against the Russian KVT-RUS Company that owns the barge. The U.S. sanctions come into force on January 19 within the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act.

Ecologists achieved temporary stop of Nord Stream 2 construction in German waters.

It was reported that U.S. imposes sanctions against Russian vessel laying Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

In addition, German Bilfinger SE Company left Nord Stream 2 amid US sanctions threat.


Dry cargo shipwreck in Black Sea

Sailors rescued from the sunken dry cargo ship Arvin returned home. The fate of another three seamen is unknown, said Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Oleg Nikolenko.

As is known, on January 17, Arvin sunk off the coast of Turkey, in the Black Sea. According to the reports, the disaster took place near the town of Bartin. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry reported that 10 Ukrainians and two foreign citizens were aboard. Six people were saved. As of early January 18, the bodies of three deceased sailors were found. 

Sports

It looks like Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will fight for all major belts in the heavyweight division, while Oleksandr Usyk and Joe Joyce will determine the WBO interim champion.

In May and June 2021, Ukraine's national football team will have three friendly matches prior to Euro 2020.
