Donbas conflict

Oleg Andriyenko, Private First Class of the 56th Detached Motorized Infantry brigade of Ukraine's Armed Forces deceased in Donbas combat area on Monday, January 11. The warrior left behind his little son, wife and mother.

French Foreign Ministry urged the warring sides in the Donbas conflict to live up to the agreements reached during the summit in Paris in 2019.

Russia and self-styled "people's republics" illegally issued passports for more than a million of citizens of occupied Donbas.

Coronavirus news

Ukraine will get Sinovac vaccine against Covid-19. However, the efficacy of the vaccine is less than 70% as it was mentioned in the contract. Later, Health Minister stated Ukraine holds talks with other vaccine producers. The President’s Office of Ukraine has also joined the negotiation process. Meanwhile, five various mutations of coronavirus were observed in Ukraine.

Amid the pandemic, the law providing more fines for the incorrect wearing of masks has come into force in Ukraine.

Besides, the first supplies of the Moderna vaccine have started this week in Europe. In Russia, mass vaccination of population might start soon. Besides, the Russian Sputnik V vaccine was registered in Venezuela and its production started in Brazil. Moreover, the vaccine against Covid-19 for animals is being developed by Finnish scientists.

However, the WHO stated that the herd immunity to coronavirus infection would not be achieved in 2021 despite the growing level of vaccines’ availability. Besides, the WHO stated that new strains of coronavirus would continue to appear

European Court of Human Rights on Crimea

The ECHR delivered verdicts on Ukraine’s lawsuits against Russia on human rights violations in the temporarily occupied Crimea. Particularly, the ECHR found that Russia's de facto control over the occupied Crimean peninsula began around February 27, 2014. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba welcomed the ECHR decision and stated that it is an important step in the prosecution of Russia.

Gas tariffs increase in Ukraine, protests

This week, people all over Ukraine protest against the increase of gas tariffs. Amid the protests, Ukraine's government proposed ways to reduce the gas tariffs for the population. Later it was reported that the price for gas would be reduced for 30%. However, the IMF is concerned about the intention of the Ukrainian government to cut the gas price for the population in the near future. 

Besides, the night tariff and life-line tariffs for electricity were canceled in Ukraine.

Snow

15 cm of snow fell on Pip Ivan Mountain in Carpathians, tourists were recommended to stay indoors.

Major snowfall caused 249 road accidents in Kyiv over day.

Trump's impeachement 

Trump:

Following the attack on U.S. Capitol, American parliamentarians officially impeached President Donald Trump. He has become the first-ever U.S. president to be impeached twice.

Number of social networks (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) officially blocked Trump’s official accounts. YouTube was the last company to join the process by suspending his profile for a week.

According to a source from U.S. Senate, new documents related to the “Russiagate” probe will be declassified on January 15. They will include various depositions, transcripts, and interviews.


Moldovan President visits Ukraine

Leaders of Ukraine and Moldova met in Kyiv; it was Maia Sandu’s first visit in Ukraine since her election as President of Moldova. The head of the Moldovan state claimed that her country continues to support Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Besides, the two leaders announced creation of the presidential council to deepen strategic bilateral cooperation between the countries.

US sanctions

U.S. introduced sanctions against Russia-linked persons and entities. Seven Ukrainians were sanctioned, among them the former Ukrainian Government officials Konstantin Kulyk, Oleksandr Onyshchenko, Andriy Telizhenko, and current Ukraine Member of Parliament Oleksandr Dubinsky.

In addition, the U.S. prepares new sanctions against Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

And sports

Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk competed at the WTA tournament that was hosted by Abu Dhabi. Svitolina ended up losing at the 1/4 finals, while Kostyuk managed to hold up until the semifinals. Both of them lost to Veronika Kudermetova (Russia).

Oleksandr Usyk does not intend to allow Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury to hold a unification bout in the heavyweight division. According to his promoter, the Ukrainian boxer will push for his WBO mandatory challenge and will not consider other options.
