A Ukrainian trooper deceased in the combat zone in eastern Ukraine. His remains were found in the forest near Schastya, Luhansk region, and identified after the DNA expertise. According to Vinnytsia regional state administration, it was Serhiy Sorochynsky. "The remains of deceased soldier (...) were identified by the DNA profie of his mother in February 2021", reads the message. He was enlisted for military service in April 2018. The fighter left behind his wife and two little children.
One more serviceman who served in the 72nd Detached Motorized Brigade of Ukraine’s Armed Forces passed away on February 22.
Another horrible tragedy occurred in Donbas this week, as three servicemen perished in fire. Their bodies will be identified after the DNA expertise. It is known that all three served with the 58th Detached Motorized Infantry Brigade.
In the afternoon of February 23, Russian mercenaries opened fire at civilians in the area of Khutir Vilny, Luhansk region. An unarmed elderly man was killed in the attack.
Cybersecurity and hackers’ attacks
Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft company has the evidence of Russian government institutions being behind the most dangerous hacker attack on the U.S. so far. It was the Sunburst attack on the systems of Solarwinds company. According to him, Microsoft corporation conducted an investigation and found out that at least 1,000 "highly qualified" programmers were involved in the development of the code that allowed hackers to penetrate the SolarWinds systems in the company's office in Texas.
On February 23, National Coordination Centre of Cyber Security of Ukraine reported an attempt to conduct a hacker attack on the executive bodies in this country. Experts believe that hackers from the Russian Federation could be behind the activity.
Vaccination campaign has started in Ukraine on February 24 when the batch of CoviShield vaccine arrived in the country. Volodymyr Zelensky called it one of the best vaccines. Meanwhile, seven ‘unfavorable events’ after the vaccination were reported.
The next batch of the vaccine is expected in Ukraine in March. Later, it was reported that Israel will pass 10 million doses of Pfizer vaccine to Ukraine.
Besides, AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines were registered in Ukraine this week. However, the vaccination process has not started in over 130 world countries. The WHO predicts the end of the pandemic at the beginning of 2022.
Meanwhile, the EU leaders have agreed to introduce digital passports for vaccination.
Odesa court sentenced far-right artivist Sternenko for kidnapping a politician for seven years in prison. Clashes with police broke out at court which was hearing Serhiy Sternenko's case. Meanwhile, Sternenko's lawyer said Zelensky offered him official position.
Detention of former PrivatBank officials
At the beginning of the week, former deputy head of board of directors of Privatbank was detained in Kyiv. However, the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine allowed Volodymyr Yatsenko suspected of embezzling property, to get out on 1.8 million dollars bail.
Besides, Prosecutor General’s Office served charges to former deputy board chairman of PrivatBank Oleksandr Dubilet in the embezzlement of 136 million of hryvnias ($4,889,421).
Situation in occupied Crimea
In March, Ukraine's airborne troops will hold military drills near the administrative border with temporarily occupied Crimea.
Meanwhile, the Russian Federation continues to illegally increase its nuclear potential in the temporarily occupied Crimea. Besides, Russia transformed Crimea into a military base, which poses a threat to Ukraine, as well as to the EU and NATO countries.
It is noted that the occupied authorities of Crimea accused of illegal acquisition of Masandra, Artek and Chornomornaftogaz companies.
Moreover, violations of human rights observed in Crimea and over 350 cases of prosecution of reporters in occupied Crimea were observed since 2014.
Volodymyr Zelensky signed law on particular measures aiming for de-occupation and reintegration of the Crimean peninsula. He also established an organizing committee for the Crimean Platform Summit.
