Situation in Donbas
Ukrainian Marine Dmytro Vlasenko was killed by an enemy sniper near the village of Shumy. The attack that took his life occurred on February 2. He served as Senior Seaman of the 503rd Detached Battalion of Marines.
Interior Minister Arsen Avakov claimed that there is no more peace process in Ukraine; there is a war going on, he said.
President of France Emmanuel Macron insisted on keeping the EU's tough position towards Russia, when it comes to the situation in Ukraine.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky instructed to conduct an inspection of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine that carry out tasks in Donbas. The main purpose of the inspection is to check the state of readiness of the forces and means involved in the Joint Force Operation (JFO) to run mission as intended.
This week, the EU renewed the recommendations on the restriction of the freedom of movement in the EU in terms of the Covid-19 pandemic. Ukraine also renewed the list of ‘red’ zone countries; currently, there are 80 states on the list.
Besides, German Chancellor Angela Merkel noted that the vaccines against coronavirus might be needed ‘for years’. It was announced that AstraZeneca vaccine is effective after the first dose.
The first case of South African strain of Covid-19 was reported in Greece.
Meanwhile, Europol warned about fake certificates on Covid-19 tests. The scientists stated that people with mental disorders have at least twice higher risk of death from coronavirus. Besides, people who overcame coronavirus recommended to get two vaccinations.
Closure of three Ukrainian TV channels
On February 2, Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on sanctions against 112 Ukraine, NewsONE, and ZiK TV channels. By this decree, he enforced the decision of the National Security and Defense Council on sanctions on the cancellation of the broadcasting licenses of the TV channels belonging to Taras Kozak (112 Ukraine, NewsOne, ZIK). According to the decree that is eligible since the moment of signature, the TV channels faced sanctions that will be active for five years. These sanctions make broadcasting impossible.
Earlier, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine demanded to close YouTube pages of 112 Ukraine, NewsOne, and ZIK TV channels.
At the same time, Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament Dmytro Razumkov said that sanctions against TV channels are always bad.
Fire in Zaporizhya regional hospital
On the night of February 4, the fire occurred at Zaporizhia regional infectious hospital. Four people died as a result of it. February 5 was announced the mourning day in Zaporizhia region. Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his condolences to the families who lost loved ones during the fire. Besides, the WHO sent condolences to families of victims of fire in Zaporizhia hospital.
Nord Stream 2
The U.S. government claimed that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline disrupts the transatlantic security. "Nord Stream 2 and the second line of Turk Stream are designed to increase Russia's leverage over our allies and partners, and they undermine transatlantic security," said U.S. State Department Spokesperson Ned Price.
French government and German parliamentary opposition urge Berlin to cease support of construction works. French State Secretary for European Affairs Clément Beaune claimed that Paris has always had “doubts about this project”.
Meanwhile, EU High Representative for Security Affairs Josep Borrell shared his negative view of the U.S. sanctions spreading on European companies, which were imposed against the construction of Nord Stream 2. "It is obvious that the EU stands against sanctions of third countries against European companies, which perform legal actions. Nord Stream 2 is not the general European project. The decision about construction of this pipeline should be made by EU member countries, which participate in the project", he said.
Accident at Zaporizhia thermal power plant
On February 3, a short circuit accident occurred at the Zaporizhia thermal power plant. 50,000 people were left without electricity and water supply.
According to the Ministry of Energy, the accident will be investigated by a special investigation commission.
Nonetheless, another accident was reported at the TPP today, on February 5: unit No.1 of DTEK Zaporizhia TPP was disconnected due to a temporary malfunction of the cooling system of the T-1 transformer.
Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk represented Ukraine at the WTA tournament in Melbourne, Australia. Both of them reached 1/4 finals of the tournament: Svitolina lost to Elise Mertens (Belgium) in an intense match, and Kostyuk was not able to deal with Jennifer Brady (USA).
On September 8, the national football team of Ukraine is scheduled to face the Czech Republic in a friendly match. It will be the fifth meeting between the teams: Ukraine has two victories on its record, one draw, and one defeat.
