Situation in Donbas
According to Ukrainian ombudsman Lyudmila Denisova, Donbas militants illegally detain 251 Ukrainians. The official also noted that 76 Ukrainians had been released in December 2019.

COVAX and the UN still do not know what vaccines from Covid-19 are used for the vaccination of the population. Besides, most social survey participants in Poland and Bulgaria claim they are not ready to get vaccinated against coronavirus.
It was also reported that the EMA will not be able to approve the vaccine against Covid-19 developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University in January. However, this vaccine was approved for use in the UK.
Concerning Ukraine, this country signed the first contract with Sinovac Biotech for the supply of 1.9 million doses of coronavirus vaccine. President Volodymyr Zelensky promised that the mass vaccination will start in Ukraine in a short time. Besides, Poland might transfer 1.5 million doses of coronavirus vaccine to Ukraine.
Zelensky VS Constitutional Court
President Volodymyr Zelensky suspended Head of Constitutional Court Oleksandr Tupytsky from office. Thus, he did what the Office of Prosecutor General had requested him to – allegedly “to solve the constitutional crisis” in Ukraine. It’s a temporary move; Tupytsky will stay suspended for two months.
The Constitutional Court responded to Zelensky’s decree, rejecting it and claiming that the head of the state abused his authority.
NABU, Mykytas and kidnapping
Former MP and ex-head of Ukrbud construction company Maksym Mykytas is notified of suspicion of ordering a kidnapping of a lawyer in Kyiv. The former official allegedly ordered to kidnap the lawyer who previously protected his interests; the man was abducted and ordered to sign a debt bill. Previously, Mykytas was also charged with seizure of property of the National Guard of Ukraine to the amount of more than 3.3 million dollars. However, he was bailed out and left the remand centre in early December 2020.
This week, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Dmytro Razumkov expressed hope that Normandy Format talks would break the deadlock in 2021. Besides, Head of President’s Office Andriy Yermak predicted the Normandy Format meeting of leaders in January in Berlin. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister stated that the Normandy format is still relevant, but there are problems in the negotiation process at the level of foreign ministers.
Sports and achievements
The International Judo Federation (IJF) officially recognized Ukrainian athlete Daria Bilodid as the best female judoka in the world. In 2019, Bilodid won the gold medal at the World Championships in Tokyo (48 kg).
Ukrainian basketball player Oleksiy Len successfully debuted for Toronto Raptors against Philadelphia 76ers. Even though Len's team was not able to win, the Ukrainian scored two points, made five rebounds, and gave two assists.
