About UN General Assembly and Crimea
On December 17, UN General Assembly approved an updated resolution on human rights in Crimea. The document condemns human rights violations in the occupied Crimea, Russia's attempted annexation and temporary occupation of the peninsula, and the illegal establishment of Russian jurisdiction and administration on it.
Ukraine’s representative to UN said at the meeting that Kremlin leadership revives cult of Stalin, who signed pact with Nazi. Serhiy Kyslytsya also noted that Moscow had pledged not to violate international borders and not to use force against other states by signing the Helsinki Final Act
About Donbas conflict
More than 14,000 people have deceased since the beginning of Russian aggression in Ukraine. In addition to the deaths of 14,000 people, almost 40,000 people were injured as a result of the Russian aggression in eastern Ukraine. This is noted in the statement of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
The Ukrainian Parliament extended the law on the special order of local self-government in some districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions for another year - until December 31, 2021.
The Ukrainian Parliament fired Serhiy Besarab from the office of the Minister for Veteran Affairs; soon after that, Yulia Laputina took the office.
Donbas militants have blocked the potential exchange of prisoners by making unrealistic demands that cannot be met. Representative of the Ukrainian delegation to the Tripartite Contact Group Serhiy Garmash posted this on his Facebook page.
A service center opened at Novotroitske checkpoint. According to Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine Oleksiy Reznikov, all citizens of Ukraine on either side of the contact line will be able to get social and administrative services, legal aid and use Nova Poshta and Oschadbank services at the service center.
This week, the first batch of anti-Covid-19 vaccine arrived to Canada. Besides, the mass vaccination of the population started in the U.S. However, two medical workers in Alaska got allergic reaction after the vaccination. In it turn, the UK stated that 37,897 people were vaccinated during the first week. Besides, it is expected that the EU will approve the use of Pfizer vaccine the next week.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated that Moderna Inc. vaccine is safe and effective.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky states the first batch of vaccine against Covid-19 should arrive in the country in January. However, it seems that Ukraine will get vaccine only for four million people.
It is also expected that Ukraine will enhance quarantine restrictions from December 19.
About appointments in Ukraine
The Verkhovna Rada approved a few candidacies of new Ukrainian ministers: Roman Leshchenko was assigned to the post of Ukraine’s new Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, Serhiy Shkarlet was appointed as Education and Science Minister, and Yulia Laputina was designated as Minister for Veterans Affairs.
It was also decided not to appoint Yuriy Vitrenko as the country’s Energy Minister.
About Henadiy Kernes
Hennadiy Kernes, the Mayor of Kharkiv, passed away on the morning of December 17. His death was caused by complications from coronavirus infection.
Kernes was 61 years old, he was diagnosed with COVID-19 back in September
It was decided to appoint Ihor Terekov, Secretary of Kharkiv City Council, as the city's acting Mayor.
About cyber attacks in the United States
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Agency for Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security (CISA) and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) reported a large-scale cyber attack on the government structures. The statement appeared on the official website of the United States government.
It is planned to create a Cyber Unified Coordination Group (UCG) to respond to this cyber incident.
The networks of the U.S. Treasury and Commerce departments have been recently attacked, too, and it is believed that Russian hackers are standing behind this breach. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the FBI have already initiated their investigation into this accident. “This is a much bigger story than one single agency. This is a huge cyber espionage campaign targeting the U.S. government and its interests,” reads the message. The Russian side, in turn, has already described the allegations as another unfounded attempt to discredit Russia.
On December 12, Armenia stated about the resumption of the conflict in Nagorno Karabakh. Later, Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of violating a peace deal that ended six weeks of fighting over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.
On December 14, Armenia stated that one of the main priorities of Armenia in policy on Nagorno-Karabakh is the return of territories captured by Azerbaijan.
Besides, Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan stated that the Azerbaijani military surrounded the Russian peacekeepers along with the Armenian detachments in Nagorno-Karabakh. However, Russia refuted this information.
About Google, Youtube, Telegram malfunction
This week, Gmail, Youtube services crashed worldwide and Google services are down in Ukraine, too; people couldn’t log in their accounts.
A few days later Telegram also was down in Europe and world.
