Donbas conflict

Russian occupants attacked a residential neighborhood in Donetsk region. A civilian was killed and a military man was injured in the same attack. The tragedy occurred in Novoselivka 2.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has identified and detained a Russian intelligence agent who was reporting on Ukrainian forces and equipment in the Donbas conflict area.

Russian mercenaries have been keeping 295 Ukrainian citizens in captivity in the territory of occupied Donbas; 30 of them are women. Tetyana Katrychenko, the coordinator of media initiative for human rights said so on air of Ukrainian Radio. According to her, some of these people are charged with "espionage", "sabotage" and "high treason" in the occupied territories.

The Ukrainian delegation at the Trilateral Contact Group plans to raise the issue of the murder of three Ukrainian detainees in the colony in the occupied territory of the Donetsk region. The respective session will take place on August 25.

Covid chronicles

Delta strain of coronavirus continues to spread in Ukraine. 80% of people infected with coronavirus in the Rivne region have the Delta strain. First cases of the new Delta strain of coronavirus were detected in the Zhytomyr region. A 9-month infant infected with Delta strain in Ternopol region. Thus, Ukraine extended the emergency state and adaptive quarantine until October 1. Besides, Ukraine changed rules of entrance for pilgrims.

This week, a woman died after vaccination with Moderna drug. Ukraine's Health Ministry recommended to shorten interval between CoronaVac doses.

Besides, Iota variant of the coronavirus was detected in New York.

Nord Stream 2

Ex-diplomat Amos Hochstein became Blinken's Energy Adviser, dealing with Nord Stream 2.

It was reported that Zelensky would discuss with Merkel guarantees after the launch of Nord Stream 2.

Later, Republicans blocked appointment of candidates to U.S. State Department due to Nord Stream 2.

Belarus-Ukraine

This week, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko warned Ukraine against attempting to resolve Donbas conflict by force. Besides, he urged Zelensky to hold talks with occupied Donbas. Moreover, Belarusian diplomat called Ukraine's actions "hostile". However, Belarus stated it will not introduce sanctions against Ukraine. In its turn, Ukraine is ready to give powerful answer in case of unfriendly steps from Belarus.

Sport

Kyiv hosted the fixture of Round 3 of UEFA Champions League's qualification. Shakhtar Donetsk defeated KRC Genk 2-1 and moved on to the qualification playoffs.

Forward of Ukraine's national team Roman Yaremchuk has debuted in SL Benfica. He appeared on the pitch in the second half of UEFA Champions League qualification fixture against Spartak Moscow. The Ukrainian replaced Goncalo Ramos; at the time, the Portuguese were leading the way. Yaremchuk helped Benfica secure the victory; he landed a shot, the ball ricocheted from Spartak's defender Samuel Gigot and ended up in the net. 

FIFA has refreshed its ranking of the world's national football teams. The top rank still belongs to Belgium; Brazil climbed to the second place, and France is now third. Ukraine lost one rank and descended to the 25th place.
