Herd immunity might stop the coronavirus pandemic in Ukraine only when two-thirds of the population has the immunity to the disease as Apostrof TV reported citing Head of the National Medical Chamber of Ukraine Serhiy Kravchenko.
The doctor assured that there are only two ways of obtaining herd immunity. The first one takes place when the population gets sick naturally and receives immunity. The second one is held artificially through the vaccination.
“To influence the intensity of the spread of the disease that is the main rate, at the first stage we need to have one-third of the population with immunity. To overcome the pandemic in general, we need at least two-thirds of the population with proper immunity. It is better if we have over 70%,” Kravchenko noted.
Besides, according to the doctor, vaccination is a priority method of forming of herd immunity.
During the last 24 hours, Ukrainian doctors detected 4,385 new cases of coronavirus in this country. 1,030,374 people have contracted the disease since the pandemic reached Ukraine; 665,729 recovered (+7,191 per day), 17,849 died (+75).
