Heart transplantation held in Cherkasy for first time

The heart transplantation was held in Cherkasy for the first time ever as the Health Ministry of Ukraine reported.

“On July 29, for the first time in Cherkasy, on the basis of the Third Cherkasy city emergency hospital, the doctors successfully held a surgery on abstraction of heart, kidneys and liver from a donor for further transplantation to a few patients,” the message says.

The heart was transplanted to a 59-year-old patient in Cherkasy regional heart center. Moreover, two donor kidneys were transplanted in Cherkasy regional oncologic dispensary.

The donor’s liver was taken to the National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology and it was transplanted to a 58-year-old man who was on the waiting list for a few years.

“The transplantation became possible after the agreement of the relatives for donation of the bodies of the donor,” the Health Minister noted.

The state of the patients is stable. They will go through long-term rehabilitation.
