Sentences for five accused in the case of murdering public activist and Advisor of Kherson City Mayor Kateryna Handziuk came into force and was enforced, as Press Secretary of Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Larysa Sarhan reported on Twitter.
“The sentence of Pokrovsky District Court of Dnipro region according to which five people were sentenced to imprisonment for committing attack at Handziuk came into force,” Sarhan wrote.
Kateryna Handziuk was the Kherson mayor's counselor and the famous fighter against corruption in her city. On July 31, 2018, she was attacked near her house. An unknown assailant poured sulfuric acid on her and escaped. In November, 33-year-old Hanzdiuk deceased because of the polyorganic failure and chemical burns, which covered up to 40 percent of her skin.
In June 2019, the Prosecutor General's Office suspended the pre-trial investigation against Vladyslav Manger and Oleksin Levin, the key suspects in the murder. This evoked public outrage, with activists taking it to the street.
