The Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants (ISPNPP) of Ukraine confirmed that the growth of nuclear activity is observed in the destroyed reactor of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant; however, it does not surpass norms as the Institute reported.
“After the installment of the New Safe Confinement in the design position over four years, the growth of density of neutrons’ flow is observed in the periphery of mass of fuel-containing materials that is localized in one of the areas under the reactor at the Shelter. However, as of today, this growth does not surpass established norms of safety controlled by staff system of control of the nuclear safety,” the message says.
According to the assumptions on the state of this mass of fuel-containing materials offered and developed by the Institute’s expert, already in 2015, it was proposed to increase the density of neutrons’ flow as a result of the exclusion of the possibility of insertion of precipitates inside the Shelters after the installment of the New Safe Confinement in the design position.
The researchers, on the basis of predictions, made a conclusion that in the future, the growth of density of neutrons’ flow will be observed and it will be defined by the process of loss of moisture in the layer of perhumid environment of lava-like fuel-containing materials.
Earlier, it was reported that fission reaction has started again inside the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant in a mass of nuclear fuel. The task of the scientists is to determine the level of danger and understand whether or not there is a necessity to interfere to prevent one more emergency.
