“Today’s Doodle commemorates Ukraine’s Independence Day, considered one of the most important Ukranian holidays of the year. On this day in 1991, Ukraine officially proclaimed full autonomy from Soviet rule,” Google writes.
Illustrated in today’s Doodle is a wreath that showcases the country’s national flower: the sunflower. Cultivation of the sunflower first began to boom across the rich soil of present-day Ukraine in the early 19th century, due in part to the flower’s useful and versatile oil, Google notes.
“Happy Independence Day, Ukraine!” the company congratulates Ukrainians.
As you know, August 24 is a national holiday of independence in Ukraine. On this day, in 1991, the country declared its independence from the USSR.
