German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock made it clear that the position of the new German government headed by Olaf Scholz regarding arms supplies to Ukraine had not changed after Angela Merkel's resignation as she stated during a joint press conference with Secretary of State Anthony Blinecken on January 5.

"Since 2014, we have helped Ukraine and supported Ukraine in the construction of a military hospital. We've supplied medical equipment. We've provided material. In addition, the federal armed forces, the Bundeswehr, have been lending a helping hand when it comes to treating wounded Ukrainian soldiers in the country. We also helped treat wounded and injured soldiers and civilians, and we brought them to Germany," Baerbock noted.

Answering the question about the probability of providing military assistance to Kyiv, the German Foreign Minister noted that the position of official Berlin regarding the supply of weapons to Ukraine is different from the American one.

As we reported, the German government led by Angela Merkel used the NATO consensus mechanism to block arms supplies to Ukraine. Therefore, the dispatch to Ukraine within NATO of 90 large-caliber Barrett M82 sniper rifles from the USA and 20 EDM4S-UA anti-drone systems from Lithuania was canceled.

As we reported, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky reproached Germany due to the refusal to supply weapons to Ukraine in the interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

However, co-chair of the Green party Robert Habeck said during a visit to Kyiv that it was difficult to deny Ukraine in right to receive defense weapons. At the same time, Habeck noted that this did not contradict the pacifist position of his party.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas responded to President Volodymyr Zelensky's request for arms supplies to Ukraine. According to the German Foreign Minister, arms supplies will not help resolve the conflict in Donbas.
