Georgia asks Ukraine to extradite Saakashvili

Ukraine’s Justice Ministry received the request from Georgian prosecutor’s office to arrest and extradite the ex-head of Odesa city administration Mikheil Saakashvili. This was reported by the Deputy Justice Minister Sergiy Petukhov during the briefing on air of 112 Ukraine TV channel.

"Ukraine received a request to search for, arrest and extradite Mikheil Saakashvili from Georgian Prosecutor General's Office. According to Georgian prosecutor general's office Saakashvili is accused of abuse of power, committed by violence or use of weapons, and deliberate infliction of grievous harm to health, abuse of office, " Petukhov said.

By the decision of the collegium of judges on criminal cases of the Tbilisi City Court as of August 2, 2014, , a preventive measure in the form of detention was set for Saakashvili, he added.

The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia provided guarantees to its Ukrainian counterpart that this request is not intended to prosecute a person for political reasons, that he will not be held liable for committing offenses not provided for by the request without the consent of Ukraine and he will not be extradited to a third state and that he will be judged according to Georgian laws, his human rights and freedoms as envisaged in international treaties will be respected.

Ukrainian Justice Ministry passed the request and all the materials to General Prosecutor’s Office for an extradition review as it is provided by criminal law of the country.

As it was reported earlier Poroshenko revoked Ukrainian citizenship of Saakashvili. The State Migration Service of Ukraine confirmed this.

The department explained that Saakashvili lost the citizenship on the basis of the point 2, article 19 of the Decree on Citizenship, precisely on the basis of the false data that is indicated at the form. Saakashvili wrote that he is not under the investigation in Ukraine or in any other country but it is known that the former president was arrested in absentia in Georgia.

The migration service also noted that the MP Andry Lozovoy filed the request to the General Prosecutor Office concerning the citizenship of Saakashvili and the prosecutor’s office contacted the service. And the Commission on Citizenship Issue made the proper decision on the request.
