The last month of autumn is coming. And it's high time to talk about what important and memorable dates await us all in November, including the number of days off.

Let's say right away: there will be many important dates, but in terms of weekends, everything is much smaller.

Let's start with the last point. There is only one public holiday in November – Dignity and Freedom Day. However, there is no official weekend on this day. It means that the number of days off will go according to the "standard monthly set", that is, Saturdays and Sundays, (November 6,7,13,14,20,21,27,28).

Day of liberation of Kyiv from Nazi invaders

November 6

The capital will celebrate the 78th anniversary of the liberation from the Nazi invaders this year. It was on November 6 that Soviet troops finally liberated Kyiv from the Nazis.

Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language

November 9

The holiday was established on November 6, 1997, by the decree of then President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma. According to this decree, the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language is celebrated annually on the day of commemoration of the Saint Nestor the Chronicler.

On the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, flowers are traditionally laid at the monument to Nestor the Chronicler; the best popularizers of the Ukrainian word are celebrated, and publishing houses that publish literature in the Ukrainian language are encouraged.

Moreover, on this day, the International Competition for Experts of the Ukrainian language starts.

Dignity and Freedom Day

November 21

It is a public holiday, which was established in 2014 by the decree of then President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.

According to this decree, the holiday was established "with the aim of affirming the ideals of freedom and democracy in Ukraine, preserving and delivering to the present and future generations of objective information about the fateful events in Ukraine at the beginning of the XXI century, as well as a tribute to the patriotism and courage of citizens who in the fall of 2004 years and in November 2013 - February 2014 stood up for the protection of democratic values, human and civil rights and freedoms, the national interests of our state and its European choice."

There is no weekend on this day.

The Holodomor Victims Memorial Day

November 27

It is the annual national memorable day in Ukraine, which falls on the fourth Saturday of November.

Traditionally, on this day, Ukrainians attend a memorial service and lay symbolic pots of grain and candles at the monuments to the victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine.

The central commemorative event takes place at the Memorial sign “Candle of Memory” in Kyiv. Usually, it is attended by top officials of the state, foreign politicians, representatives of various organizations and religious denominations, and so on.

At 4:00 pm, a nationwide minute of silence is announced, after which an action "Light a Candle" is held throughout Ukraine, within which everyone, who wants to participate, carries candles to the monuments to the victims. You can also take part in the promotion by lighting a candle in your window.

International Students' Day 

November 17

It is the holiday of all students, which is celebrated in most countries of the world on November 17. It was established in Ukraine by the decree of President Leonid Kuchma on June 16, 1999.

In connection with the holiday, students are usually mentioned on one more date – Tatiana Day on January 25. But it is celebrated mainly in Russia.

The beginning of the Nativity Fast

November 28

The Nativity Fast in Ukraine traditionally begins on November 28 and lasts 40 days - until January 6, 2021.

During this time, believers pray, are cleansed of their sins, and also limit themselves to fun and food.

The Nativity Fast is not as strict as, say, the Great Fast. Dairy products, eggs, and meat are excluded from the diet. Wine and fish are allowed on selected days.
