Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba and his Hungarian counterpart Péter Szijjártó agreed to hold talks against the background of aggravation of relations between the two countries. It was reported by Yevropeiska Pravda agency.
“Hungary is an important partner and a close neighbor. Neighbors sometimes quarrel, but then have to reconcile because they remain neighbors. So we agreed that in late January, my colleague Szijjártó will visit Kyiv to discuss the situation in bilateral relations and ways to solve the problems based on the principle of mutual respect,” Kuleba said.
According to media reports, it is a personal visit to Szijjártó to find a way out of the crisis in the relations. It is noted that the visit of the Hungarian official to Kyiv has already been agreed upon and is expected by the end of this month.
The talks were initiated by Hungary, but the invitation to meet in Kyiv came from the Ukrainian side.
As we reported, on December 1 it became known that in Zakarpattia, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) investigated actions of deputies of the Syurtivska village united territorial community, part of which performed the national anthem of Hungary during taking the oath.
In late November, Ivan Chubirko, MP of Zakarpattya branch of Opposition Platform - For Life claimed that the SBU, the state security service ran a check at the place of Vasyl Brenzovych, the leader of Hungarian society in that region.
According to SBU, the searches revealed a number of printed materials that promote the so-called “Greater Hungary” and the creation of ethnic autonomy in Zakarpattia.
On December 1, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry summoned Hungarian Ambassador to Ukraine Istvan Iidyarto to discuss the situation with the SBU's investigative actions in Zakarpattia.
Earlier, in October, 2020, the State Secretary for National Policy Árpád János Potápi during visit to Zakarpattia agitated locals to vote for „KMKSZ” Ukrajnai Magyar Párt (“Party of Hungarians of Ukraine”).
