Leading world foreign agencies published 114,853 articles criticizing the actions of Ukrainian officials since early February, when the Ukrainian authorities, represented by President Volodymyr Zelensky, began illegal persecution of Chairman of the Opposition Platform - For Life Viktor Medvedchuk, his wife Oksana Marchenko, as well as a number of other opposition politicians and independent TV channels (112 Ukraine, NewsOne and ZiK).

It should be noted that the share of positive publications or information neutral as a whole amounts to 94,600 materials or 82.3% of the total number of publications. The share of critical materials is 17.7% (20,253 publications).

In October, the number of positive references to Chairman of the Opposition Platform - For Life, MP Viktor Medvedchuk in foreign media increased sharply, due to new attempts of the Ukrainian authorities to restrict the political activities of the leader of the Ukrainian opposition. During this period, the authoritative foreign mass media paid the main attention to three key events:

- on October 8, representatives of the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) summoned Medvedchuk allegedly to familiarize himself with the materials of a long-ended criminal case on high treason and violation of the rules of war. At the same time, representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine attempted, in violation of the legislative procedure, to press new charges against opposition politicians with suspicion of high treason and assisting terrorism, but Medvedchuk's lawyers did not allow this;

- on October 8, the Prosecutor General’s Office and Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) still pressed new charges of treason and assisting terrorism against Viktor Medvedchuk;

- on October 12, Pechersk District Court ruled on a preventive measure in the form of house arrest for Medvedchuk on a new suspicion until December 7. Medvedchuk himself said that he would continue to fight the current government, regardless of how much the repression against him intensifies. He stressed that together with the Opposition Platform – For Life, he will continue to defend the interests of the Ukrainian people.

Hundreds of respectable international media outlets reacted sharply to these events and criticized Zelensky for yet another act of repression against the leader of the Ukrainian opposition Viktor Medvedchuk.

For example, Reuters, Bloomberg, and France Presse, as well as numerous mass media of Switzerland, Canada, USA, Germany, Spain, France, and Great Britain, referring to the illegal actions of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine and the Security Service of Ukraine to increase pressure on Viktor Medvedchuk, by another intensification of the illegal investigation against the leader of the Ukrainian opposition indicated that the new illegal investigation and formal suspicion of high treason against the Ukrainian politician only increase the tension in bilateral relations between Kyiv and Moscow and nullifies the stabilization of the situation in the region.

“Poroshenko's party called the accusations a smokescreen to divert attention from the government's own wrongdoing. Medvedchuk's Opposition Platform — For Life party on Friday said the latest accusations showed the "complete helplessness" of prosecutors in failing to substantiate earlier accusations against him. In a statement, the party accused President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's government of trying to "divert people's attention from their catastrophic failures,” Reuters wrote.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg noted that the ex-head of the National Bank of Ukraine Valeria Gontareva called the joint statements of the head of the SBU Ivan Bakanov and the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Iryna Venedyktova regarding the alleged new evidence in the case of Viktor Medvedchuk - "nonsense."

“I have never had anything to do with Medvedchuk, whom I have never seen in my life, neither with the financing of terrorism, nor with the purchase of coal or electricity,” a number of outlets quote Gontareva.

Viktor Medvedchuk himself, as France Presse reported, called the new charges against him legally insignificant facts, which was randomly gathered in order to build up an accusation. He also noted that in another criminal case against him, not only the corpus delicti is missing, but also the event of the crime.

“If I were not a lawyer, I would say it is completely absurd (new charges- ed.). And given that I, after all, have an understanding of jurisprudence, I would like to say that the accusations against me under these two articles are, first of all, and I emphasize this, they concern November 2014 and January 2015. I emphasize this because I believe that the facts which today form the basis of the so-called validity of the so-called notice of suspicion, are nothing but legally insignificant facts which were randomly gathered in order to build up this accusation and talk about it today,” the politician noted.

Many of these outlets actually described the current Zelensky regime as dictatorial and authoritarian, in which it is a regular occurrence that power structures make illegal decisions and total restrictions are put on freedom of speech in the country.

In its turn, Forbes drew the attention of its multi-million audience to the fact that President Zelensky, who took the chair of the head of state thanks to his acting skills, seeks to strengthen his power exclusively by reprisals against his political opponents, in particular, with Chairman of the Political Council of the Opposition Platform - For life, MP Viktor Medvedchuk. At the same time, the outlet notes that Ukraine is mired in corruption scandals.

“Pandora's documents do not bode well for Ukraine and will have a bad effect on Zelensky,” Forbes writes.

Spanish media openly called Zelensky a dictator. Thus, the Spanish newspaper La Razón stated in the article “Recent “successes” of Zelensky in Ukraine” how Zelensky has recently been increasingly showing signs of the dictatorial rule of the country. The outlet emphasizes that the head of state has seriously tightened control over all processes in the country, which cannot but cause concern among the European public.

Teller Report wrote that Zelensky's statement about the possibility of Medvedchuk's exchange indicates that he fears for his rating, and the opposition politician has become a political prisoner of the current government.

As we reported, in September there was an increase in positive publications in the foreign media. The main attention in this period was focused on: trial against Medvedchuk, in the framework of which, on September 2, Pechersk District Court ruled to extend the term of the preventive measure in form of the house arrest until October 31; a visit of French Senators to Ukraine in early September, who met with Medvedchuk and journalists of 112 Ukraine, NewsOne and ZIK TV channels illegally closed by President Zelensky; a report of the head of the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine Matilda Bogner, in which she expressed the opinion that the imposition of sanctions by the Ukrainian authorities against TV channels and electronic media does not comply with international standards in the sphere of freedom of expression.

The key message of the critical materials has not changed significantly over the past month. The situation was shown one-sided in these materials. Almost all publications in this category wrote about Zelensky’s successful multi-move in the fight against oligarchs and the pro-Russian lobby in Ukraine. The argumentation of the articles was based on unproven accusations by the NSDC. The actions of the Ukrainian authorities to suppress the Ukrainian opposition were called a blow to the pro-Russian forces in Ukraine and directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Almost all publications in this category called Zelensky’s decisions an effective tool in combating Russian aggression and propaganda.
