The first Olympic champion of independent Ukraine, figure skater Oksana Baiul, renounced her Ukrainian citizenship. Baiul wrote about this on her Instagram page.
"I am doing this. I am so excited. It’s time. Thank God, thank you for everything. I am not trying to prove anything to anyone else. No, it’s not like that. The Constitution of Ukraine states that only sole citizenship is permitted in Ukraine... Under Ukrainian legislation, if a citizen of Ukraine acquires the citizenship of another state, such a person is still only recognized as a citizen of Ukraine in legal relations. I am giving up my Ukrainian citizenship," Baiul wrote.
The figure skater did not write the exact reason for her act, but earlier on the social network Baiul reported that she was not invited to the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Ukraine's Independence. She called such an act a humiliation on the part of the Ukrainian authorities.
